TOMORROW: Artist Talk by Samantha Fields ⚡️

🗓️ Wednesday, September 17 at noon
📍 Weisman Museum of Art, 1st floor

After receiving her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art, and her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, moved to Los Angeles, where she is currently a Professor of Art and the Interim Associate Dean of the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, & Communication at California State University, Northridge.

Fields has “gained recognition for her lovingly rendered images of disasters and disorientations in the natural landscape and built environment — fires, floods, tornadoes, and the like. But since 2016, her concept of destruction has expanded to include the chaos and confusion rampant in this chapter of our social and political history,” writes critic Shana Nys Dambrot. “While her iconography and palette intensified, the images have remained metaphorical, with emotions evoked and Cassandra-like warnings issued, and dark humor abounding as a strategy for staying sane.”

She has received numerous awards and recognition, including a prestigious City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Grant. She has an extensive exhibition history, including shows at rdfa Los Angeles, The University Art Museum in Long Beach, The Museum of Art & History, Lancaster, Western Project, & Kim Light/LIGHTBOX Gallery in Los Angeles, Melanee Cooper Gallery in Chicago, Dirt Gallery in Los Angeles, POST Gallery in Los Angeles, Galerie Enholm Englehorn in Vienna, Austria. She is represented by Traywick Contemporary in Berkeley, California.

This event is free and open to the public; no registration is required. Organized by Pepperdine’s Fine Arts Department in collaboration with the Weisman Museum of Art.

🙌 Opening Soon 🙌

Mark your calendar for the opening reception of Hold My Hand in Yours, a group exhibition of 20 artists and collectives that celebrates the symbolic power of the hand. Across the mediums of painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, installation, performance, video, and social practice, artists use the hand to consider labor and caretaking, solidarity and closeness, and the intimacies that shape our everyday lives. In an era increasingly defined by digital distance and social fragmentation, these artists insist instead on interdependence and the transformative possibilities of embodied connection, with ourselves and with the world around us.

🗓️ Saturday, September 6
📍 Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University

“I’m seriously committed to my work, but I don’t take myself too seriously.”

In a just-published interview with critic Jonathan Griffin, Karl Haendel shares insight into his work, particularly his approach to tackling subjects such as masculinity, vulnerability, empathy, and connection. “I set out to reflect on some small moments in my life that I hope evidence a human who is caring, empathetic, and connected to others,” Haendel says. “I suppose those are some of the qualities I’m thinking about as ‘less bad’, in contrast to an antiquated masculinity based on domination and control.”

Rethinking Accessibility 🙌

This summer, Weisman director Andrea Gyorody has joined forces with Professor of Studio Art Gretchen Batcheller and Assistant Professor of English and SAAJ Program Director Chad Duffy to lead a cohort of recent Pepperdine graduates in experimenting with approaches to audio description at the museum. Supported by a generous Cross-Disciplinary and Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research Grant from the dean of Seaver College, this initiative is part of a larger effort at the museum to expand inclusion and accessibility, particularly through the digital tools afforded by our digital gallery guide on the Bloomberg Connects platform.

A few weeks ago, Gyorody and Batcheller were joined by CDUIR interns Annabel Becker ‘25, Jerica Covell ‘25, Joyce Kim ‘25, and P***e Klopp ‘25 at the studio of artist Carmen Argote, whose work will be included in a forthcoming group exhibition at the Weisman.

Look out for the initial outcomes of this project on our Bloomberg Connects guide in early September!
