Throughout the US military, February 3 is known as Four Chaplains day.
The Malden Army Airfield was less than three months from opening when four newly commissioned chaplains of different faiths were crossing the North Atlantic on the troop ship USAT Dorchester. On that night 83 years ago German submarines attacked the convoy. The Dorchester was hit and began to sink. The four chaplains rallied together to support their service members, providing directions, handing out lifejackets, and helping to maintain calm. When the lifejackets ran out, all four gave up theirs and went down with the ship.
Survivors of the wreck credited the chaplains with ensuring an orderly evacuation, saving many lives in the process. In 1948 Congress issued a stamp memorializing the "Four Immortal Chaplains."
