Step behind the curtain with these theatrical set design sketches by artist and designer John F. Hawkins for A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court (1927). Featured here are designs for Merlin’s costume along with the set designs Act I Scene I, The Road to Camelot, and Arthur’s Court, and Act I Scene II. ✨🎭

A close friend of J. André Smith and a Bok Fellow, Hawkins shared Smith’s passion for the theater arts as both a set and costume designer. These sketches were created by Hawkins when we worked at the famed Ward and Harvey Studios. Between 1921 and 1932, the studio helped shape the visual world of Broadway productions with scenic designs for shows including Chee-chee, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, A Farewell to Arms, Janet of France, The Sap from Syracuse, and Through the Years.

These sketches offer a rare glimpse into the imagination and craftsmanship that brought Broadway productions to life nearly a century ago.
Fun Fact: Hawkins is the artist responsible for our Mayan mural in the Mayan Courtyard!

From The Studios ✨ Our Studio Artists are on month 8 of their residencies including Lisa Moore from studio 6 who said:

“‘From the Studio’ this month has been filled with finishing touches, reflection, and new beginnings. I’m currently completing two quilts for an upcoming exhibition — binding edges, layering textures, and adding the final details that bring each piece fully to life. Although the works are still unnamed, both are deeply personal and rooted in family history.
One quilt centers around my own journey of exploring my family connections to the Sea Islands of South Carolina and reflecting on the landscapes, waterways, and cultural memory tied to my Gullah Geechee heritage.

The second quilt honors my 6th great-grandfather, John E. Proctor, who served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1873 to 1875, and 1879 to 1881, and Florida Senate from 1883 to 1885 representing Leon County. Through fabric, stitching, and layered imagery, I’m exploring legacy, resilience, and the complexity of serving during that time.

At the same time, a new creative path is opening. My fellow studio artist Channing Gray generously gifted me with several pieces of canvas and another studio artist Carlos Manuel Azuaje graciously built frames for them. Over the coming months, I’ll begin exploring painting alongside my quilting practice. I’ve always been drawn to canvas work — especially the richness and movement found in oil and acrylic painting — and I’m excited to see how these mediums may expand my storytelling.”

Follow along each week as we continue to go behind the scenes with each of our Studio Artists throughout the year.🧑‍🎨

From The Vault: The Marne 📗
Author and artist J. Andre Smith didn’t just write his own books – he also brought other authors’ stories to life through illustration. One example is The Marne: Historic and Picturesque (1922) by journalist and historian Joseph Mills Hanson, a richly illustrated exploration of the Marne River region of France, forever linked to the pivotal World War I battles fought there. 🎨🗺️🕊️

Smith was uniquely suited for the project. During World War I, he served in France with the American Expeditionary Forces as an official war artist, documenting military life, landscapes, and the realities of war through sketches and paintings. His firsthand experience traveling through wartime France gave him a deep familiarity with the terrain, architecture, and atmosphere of the Marne region. 📖✒️🏛️

Published just a few years after the war’s end, The MarneI reflects both historical memory and artistic interpretation. Smith’s illustrations helped readers visualize the landscapes forever shaped by conflict, while also capturing the enduring beauty of the French countryside.
Complete with maps, plates, and decorative design elements, the book highlights Smith’s remarkable ability to merge art, history, and storytelling. 📚🎨🪖
