Anthracite Coal Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania

Anthracite Coal Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania A place to reflect upon the history, culture, & media representations of the Anthracite Region This page is born out of such dialogue.

This page contains curated images, cultural references, news items, and materials to consider and understand the importance of the Anthracite Coal Region (Carbon, Columbia, Dauphin, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Northumberland, and Schuylkil Counties). Having grown up in the Anthracite Coal Region of Pennsylvania, I have focused my academic research on the real world histories and experiences of people who

call the Coal Region their home, of those who grew up there, but moved away, and of those who are newer residents of the region. Friends, neighbors, and family used to share news items and images that they’ve found and we later discussed them. Please feel free to use the page as a tool for memories, news, or as a teaching resource. 🚫⚠️ Abandoned Mine Pits: Not a Playground ⚠️🚫

To our community members: Did you ever hang out at an abandoned mining pit? Did you explain their dangers to your children? These sites may look like places to explore or cool off, but they are extremely hazardous.

From unstable ground and "bad air" to deep water and old structures, abandoned mines are not safe for swimming, hanging out, or any recreational activities. Every year, lives are lost or people get hurt because these warnings are ignored.

There are ways to make your curiosity safer by visiting local mining museums or taking supervised tours that honor our mining history without the risks.

You may also get involved in preserving our memories and heritage in other ways by volunteering.

Remember: Stay Out, Stay Alive!

Share your memories about mine lands and help spread the word! 💬

Dozens of people get injured or die in the U.S. every year because they don’t follow this simple advice: Stay out of abandoned and active mines and surrounding lands. Abandoned mines are not history…

Some words from EPCAMR on local environmental funding pauses that clean up polluted mine water and abandoned mines. This work brings our streams back fisheries back from polluted legacy mining landscapes.

🚨 Did you know: Despite recent court rulings, numerous recipients are not getting their promised cash from the government, including states expecting funds from the still-frozen Abandoned Mine Land program. 🚨

“There are going to be a lot of these requests for project approvals that aren’t getting approved, so particularly in emergency situations, that’s really problematic, because you could have an ongoing subsidence issue that’s getting worse over time, or a landslide that’s continuing to get worse, and the state agency won’t be able to get approval to stop it,” said Chelsea Barnes, director of government affairs and strategy at Appalachian Voices.

“A big part of what the Abandoned Mine Land program does is keep people safe. Millions of people live near abandoned mine lands throughout Appalachia."
