EASY DOES IT - it is hard to believe that since I started the John McCrady Art School in 1957 I have consistently recorded my whole life in a diary of thousands of drawings, paintings and photos. I can remember where, when and who l was with at any time. The wonderful people I have met have been the greatest of these experiences. Special thanks to a friend I met that gave me a tour around the marshes of Bay Saint Louis including his residence.

PHILIP'S DECOY -This unfinished piece was given to me by a long time friend and student. I put it on a shelf in a hallway and forgot about it. The light in the hallway went out and a secondary light gave me this view. Light source changes everything. I took a photo of it and painted a watercolor 11 x 15 inches. The simplest detail can make a difference. The chiaroscuro effect, light and dark contrast, made the difference. Values do the work - color gets the glory.

PEARS - Larry completed this beautiful 11 x 14 pastel in 1994 sandpaper pastel pastel primed with black acrylic. He loved this medium - the sandpaper just GRABS the pastel and the colors layer so beautifully, almost a jewel like feel to it. The technique Larry used was captured in the WILD ROSES video posted last Saturday. Same techniques, different subject matter (https://youtu.be/2fynSS6QFq0). Try it...

Admiring art and enjoying the creation of paintings through color, light, and and lines is like watching Gid create from nothing.

LAST FEEDING - it is always a great experience walking the beaches at dusk. The darkening process illuminates the late evening gulls searching for that last meal for the day. A student took this photo on the coast while feeding them and shared this with me. The peace, tranquility and mood of the moment is clearly felt. Simple and one of my favorites.

BEACHED - This painting was done last weekend on Arches 300 lb watercolor paper. In step 1, I taped the horizon line and boat with masking tape and cut edges with xacto knife. The paper was wet heavily above horizon and painted in stages from light to dark while still wet. My palette was yellow ochre, cad red light and ivory black (contains blue). This palette was derived from Chevreul the French chemist who devised the theory of Spontaneous Contrast of tone and values.
Notice how the center of interest counters the movement of the sky and leads your eye back in to the painting to the left. The water moves from left to right and continues the movement through the entire painting and connects it with the sky.

CHRISTMAS 1957 PRESERVATION HALL - This painting was inspired by an unusual event that took place the first year I attended the John McCrady Art School in 1957. It was located in the 900 block of Bourbon St. I witnessed the first snow I had ever seen and it was not only strange but it was also enough so that we could make a snowman and throw snowballs. This seemed like the perfect subject to illustrate this subject. The building has an unusual antiquity about it and it is a favorite with artists because of the almost haunting look the exterior has with overlapping colors in the aging and mildew process on the doors and brick.

BAKER BARN - this picture was taken about 40 years ago and it reminds me of the three years l spent painting in Vermont. Snow produces beautiful shapes and designs in nature not normally seen. Colors appear you have never seen before and everything is sharp and crisp. Brings back wonderful memories.
