Museum Mondays!

Our museums have gift shops! While admission is always free, sales of items help support the museums. A visitor favorite at both museums is *Images of Madison County* , which consists entirely of photos shared by Madison County folks. A number of other publications are also available, as well as note cards and other Madison-themed gifts.

Get your tickets now for “Acts of Atonement,” a sequel to the 2022 production “Can’t Feel at Home,” which had 25 sold out showings! This play continues the story of the Lamm family and the lasting effects of their displacement from what became Shenandoah National Park.

Museum Mondays!

Save the date for our Open House and Mountain Skills Day at the Mountain Museum at Criglersville, Sunday, September 13, noon to 4 pm. Examples and demonstrations of various “mountain life skills” will be featured, including quilting, weaving, basketry, and more. Local authors will be available for book signings and purchases, with several speakers planned. Live music and a food truck will also be on hand, for a day filled with history and family fun. Admission is free, with food and items available for purchase.

The museum is home to Madison County’s memorial to the families displaced by the creation of Shenandoah National Park, and preserves the history of those people and the surrounding area.

Museum Mondays!

The cabin behind the Kemper Residence that served as slave quarters was restored in 2009 by local craftsmen, in cooperation with the Geography Dept. at James Madison University. The deteriorating logs and foundation made the building unstable. The roof, siding, floorboards, doors, and windows were all salvaged to be included in the restored structure. A team from JMU helped with excavation and recovered historical artifacts for preservation. A new foundation using period bricks and new logs stacked with period techniques were topped by the original roof. The chimney was restored, and the original windows, doors, siding, and flooring were returned. Today the inside is set up as it may have been in the mid-1800s.

Museum Mondays!

This week is the annual Madison County Fair. This 1930 photo shows a long-ago school outing to the fair by the students of the Hoover School, a mountain school founded by President Herbert Hoover and his wife, Lou, near their retreat in northern Madison County. County school superintendent A. Waverly Yowell is seated on the far left, holding his infant son, Mayo. On the far right is Christine Vest, the school's teacher.

The school was short-lived. The Hoovers wanted the children of the area to have access to schooling and so funded the creation of the school, but the subsequent creation of Shenandoah National Park forced residents to leave. Learn more about the school and the residents of what became the park at our Mountain Museum in Criglersville, open Sundays 1-4 pm.

Museum Mondays!

Several historic buildings still remain behind the Kemper Residence, and can be visited during museum hours. This cabin was built as slave quarters, later housing paid servants. The interior shows how the single room might have looked in the mid-1800's. Visitors can peek into the overhead loft. Be sure to watch your head upon entering! The building was restored in 2009 in cooperation with the history department at James Madison University.

The Madison Museum is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 10 am to 2 pm.

Please see below. I know it may be hard to read, but please enlarge and feel free to attend for as long as you like, but due to the weather, feel free to only attend for the portion you would like to see also, feel free to come get food and leave if you wish. Also, plan to have a misting tent and can still go into the Board of Supervisors Auditorium to cool off, the Madison County Virginia Historical Society or the Madison County Library to look at exhibits and cool off as well. Safety first.

Museum Mondays! Hours for the Madison Museum this week:

Tuesday 6/30: 10 am to 2 pm (normal hours)
Thursday 7/2: 10 am to 2 pm, AND 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm during Madison's 250th celebration
Friday 7/3: closed

The Mountain Museum at Criglersville will be open during its normal hours on Sunday, July 5, 1-4 pm.
