Dane Arts is thrilled to welcome our newest Commissioner, Deshawn McKinney! šŸŽ‰

Reposted from Commissioner McKinney

Happy to announce that I've been confirmed as the newest member of the Dane County Arts And Cultural Affairs Commission!

I feel incredibly grateful for all that the arts have given me, both as a practicing artist and a consumer, and it's important to me that we value and honor the impact arts have. I joined to help build bridges, to grow the investment in the arts, and to carve out paths for emerging creators. If that aligns, let's build together.

This month, we highlight the April feature of the 2024 Dane Arts Calendar:

Karen Nell McKean Fine Art and Portraits , Dairy Land, 2021, Oil on canvas

About the Artist and the Artwork:

Ever since I was a child, I have been captivated by the world's beauty and driven
to recreate it through my oil paintings. My life's journey as an award-winning oil
painter has been fueled by my innate passion for art, from my early days as a
prodigy in Chicago to my current life in Oregon, Wisconsin. My attention to detail,
use of color and commitment to authenticity are qualities that set my work apart.
In my work, I am particularly drawn to mysterious and magical realist images that
emerge from dreams and my imagination, but I also enjoy creating human and
animal portraits, impressionistic landscapes, and even some photo-realistic
depictions. As an equestrian, I take great pleasure in painting horses as well.

Throughout my career, I have dedicated myself to honing my skills and technique
as an oil painter. I was consistently enrolled in private art lessons during my early
school years. One of my early works is on permanent display at the Boy Scout
Hall of Fame in Pennsylvania. Another was a painting interpreting the story of
ā€˜The Blind Men and the Elephantā€™ which was commissioned as a gift to Paul
Tillich, the famous theologian. Besides the private tutoring I received as a child, I
studied art at The Art Institute of Chicago, University of Illinois, and University of
Wisconsin.

In my adult life this dedication has led me to create artworks for various
exhibitions, solo shows, private clients, and public spaces such as Epic Systems
Software and Ovens of Brittany restaurant group (of which I was a founding
member). One of my impressionistic landscapes has now been chosen to
illustrate the 2024 month of April for the Dane Arts Calendar published in
Madison, WI. I currently have 11 pieces on permanent display at Epic Systems
Software.

Business of Art Conference III Presents:
Katie Morrow: Generative AI for Fund Development

AI isn't just for sci-fi movies anymore; it's real, and it is here. If you can't decide whether AI is a cool futuristic tool or a robot plotting to take your job, take a breath. AI has potential, especially when it comes to grant writing and fundraising. Whether you're dipping your toes into the AI pool for the first time or a seasoned enthusiast, this session's got you covered. We'll dive into best practices, tips and tricks, and hands-on applications. It doesnā€™t matter if you are part of a big team or a solo fundraiser, AI's ready to be the coworker you never knew you needed. This session will spark curiosity and boost your confidence in utilizing AI for fundraising and grant writing.

Katie began her fundraising journey as a development intern for a large nonprofit. Over the years, she's worn many hats, from Development Director and grant writer to grant coordinator and administrator. Today she can be found writing grants - lots of them - for Loving Venti as a content writer. Passionate about tech and efficiency, and inherently lazy, Katie's fully embraced the AI era, writing hundreds grants and pieces of content (and, this bio). She has taken many trainings on AI uses for content, grant writing, and dedicates probably too much time to the AI subreddit.

Whether you're looking to explore making a living with your creative talents or wanting to expand your current pursuits, come join in community at the Art+Lit Laboratory in Madison, WI.

The Potential and Perils of AI in Media Arts

Open AI released ChatGPT to the public in November 2022, and over the subsequent months generative AI tools have taken the world by storm. Scientists, academics, policy makers, and artists, have greeted this technological innovation (or invasion) with equal parts excitement, derision, and fear. This workshop explores both the power and the pitfalls of AI for artists, through a discussion of Aaron Greerā€™s evolving relationship to generative AI as a filmmaker, and a demonstration of some of the AI tools used by film and media artist.

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Aaron Greer is the proud son of a community organizer and a union millwright. He received his film training and MFA from Temple University in Philadelphia, where he began his career as an independent filmmaker and media artist.

As a filmmaker, Greer has developed a diverse professional portfolio. He co-directed and produced the award-winning film, Service to Man (2017), featuring Keith David and Lamman Rucker, and has written, directed, edited and/or produced numerous other media projects, including two additional feature-length films, as well as shorts, dance films, documentaries, screenplays, and narrative podcasts.

Greer is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Arts at UW-Madison, with over 20 years of teaching experience, leading courses that range in topic from directing, to screenwriting, to editing, to basic media production techniques.
