The Dean House

The Dean House Near Madison, WI preserving the history of Blooming Grove Township and the Dean House museum.

The mission of the Historic Blooming Grove Historical Society, established in 1971 is to:
*Preserve and promote the history of Blooming Grove township which includes the City of Monona and Madison's southeast side
*Restore, furnish and preserve the Nathaniel & Harriet Dean House as a center for local history research, and cultural events, as well as a testament to the pioneer spirit that brought p

eople to Blooming Grove Township in Dane County, Wisconsin. The Dean House was built in 1856 by Nathaniel & Harriet Dean on their then 508 acre farm in the Township of Blooming Grove. The Township of Blooming Grove will be completely annexed by the City of Madison in 2027. The home serves as a representation of a victorian farm house as well as a museum and historical site preserving the history of the Township of Blooming Grove. The newly refurbished 3-season Back Porch on The Dean House is available for rent. Rates and information are available on our website: www.historicbloominggrove.org.

When the Dean House first became a museum in the 1970s, our tradition was to offer sleigh rides in the winter. Those days are behind us like the promise of a Wisconsin white Christmas, but we have this lovely memory by Candy Kreigh.

This is an Alderney bull. The Alderney came from the Channel Islands like Guernsey and Jersey cows, but are now extinct. When the Germans occupied the islands during WWII, and most locals were evacuated, the Alderney were eaten out of existence.

Thanks to the earlier find of the name Winnetoon, we can now search it directly to find more information. Nathaniel's milk cart ran away on the job. Notice they were a "Span of Horses." In an older post, I mentioned that a span of horses was a matched working team of horses. History is like learning a foreign language or decoding a puzzle.

This is one way historians put together the pieces of a puzzle; a tiny clipping from a 150-year-old newspaper tells us the name of Nathaniel Dean's farm is "Winnetoon" and the type of cows he owned. We knew neither fact before one of our researchers stumbled across this.

Black Bridge was once the only way across the Yahara River in Monona. This is a model of its original structure. In the 1920s, the area around the bridge was known for its speakeasies, bootleggers, and dancing girls.
