The Dining Room mantle is one of the most impressive features in Hay House. It was purchased by builder William Butler Johnston in New York City in the 1850s. The mantle is hand carved out of oak and is about 20 ft tall. It is speculated that the mantle was produced by a French-trained cabinet maker named Alexander Roux. The carved hunting motif at the top and other decorative elements closely resemble other works by Mr. Roux currently on exhibit at the MET and Yale University Art Gallery.

#DidYouKnow that Hay House, a property of The Georgia Trust, was built in Macon between 1855 and 1859 for William Butler Johnston, who was not the typical nineteenth-century Southerner. Johnston obtained his substantial wealth through investments in banking, railroads, and public utilities rather than from the agrarian cotton economy of the time. In 1851, he married Anne Clark Tracy, a well-educated woman from a predominant Macon family, and the two embarked on an extended honeymoon to Europe. During their trip, the Johnstons visited hundreds of museums, historic sites, and art studios.

The Johnstons collected fine porcelains, sculptures, and paintings as mementos of their Grand Tour. They were inspired by the Italian architecture they observed and upon their return to America constructed a monumental Italian Renaissance Revival mansion in Macon, today known as Hay House.

We invite you to visit and explore Hay House when it re-opens to the public.

We asked our staff to tell us their favorite historic place in Georgia, and here's the response we got from Clint Sims, our Operations Manager at Hay House.

"I would be remiss if I didn’t choose the Hay House as my favorite historic place in Georgia. While employed with the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, we have visited several sites around Georgia, and while they are intriguing, being at the Hay House every day reminds me of the enormous responsibility we have in restoring, maintaining and showing others the many faces of the Palace of the South. Being from the Macon area, most citizens take for granted that the House has always been here and will remain forever. But the truth is, it takes so much work from so many people to keep the House open and running.

The Johnston-Felton-Hay House, known in Macon as the Hay House, was built between 1855-1859 and is one of Georgia’s most historic homes. The 18,000 square-foot, 24-room home has four levels as well as a three-story cupola. The technological amenities were unheard of in the years that the House was built, including hot and cold running water, central heat, a speaker tube system connecting most of the rooms, a French lift, in-house kitchen and an elaborate ventilation system. The House was certainly a modern home before its time, considering the period that it was built. What some people don’t know is the costs associated with the building of the house. The residence costs approximately $100,000 to build, and another $100,000 to complete the interior, with the decorative finishes, painting and other interior finishes. That equates to well over $6,000,000 in today's funds to complete, but not furnish, this fabulous home!

Being at the House on a daily basis makes you very aware of your ornate surroundings. Every time that I walk into a room, I see something that I have never seen before. You notice a different medallion, a curved piece of molding, the many alcoves in the House are so different from room to room. You always notice something that you haven’t noticed before. It is a truly amazing house, and I am blessed to be able to see it on a daily basis. It makes you wonder what it was like to live in such a home, and how the varied families that resided here lived a normal life. I guess what we consider normal in today's environment is certainly different than in the times when the house was occupied by its past owners.

Hay House at night is truly magical. Darkness covers some of the elements of time that has robbed the house of its original splendor. It’s a time when you can close your eyes and truly imagine being in an era when the house was filled with families of the past, lights peeking out from between shutters and drapes, and music flowing out the open windows."

We at the Hay House offer our sincere condolences to the family of Jerry Thigpen. He passed away last week after a brief illness. In 2017 our gift shop committee hired Jerry to build new cabinetry for the shop. He did a splendid job and left the House a small bit of his legacy.

As the first brewery in Macon since Prohibition, Macon Beer Company has already made history. And history will look on the release of this malty brown ale as an important event indeed. But you don't have to wait until then to enjoy this beer's notes of smooth, sweet caramel or its rich aroma.⁣

The period between 1870 and 1900 was labeled the “Gilded Age” by authors Mark Twain and Charles Dudley. This era was embodied by an abundance of wealth and extravagance. These gilt German “goddess plates” purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Felton in the late 19th/early 20th century truly signify this era and the wealth of the Johnston-Felton family. Produced in Vienna, all plates have a beehive stamp on the bottom.

Yesterday Aubrey Newby, the chair of our board, and the staff of the House traveled to Milledgeville to tour the Old Governor’s Mansion. Matt Davis, its director, took us on an expanded tour. Not only were we able to see that gorgeous house in full Christmas glory but also its very sophisticated and impressive new lighting, security, and fire prevention systems. These were just installed earlier this month and were immediately added to our Hay House wish list. Thanks to Matt for his gracious hospitality.

Thank you for this beautiful post! Come see us!

Inspired by the mansions of Florence and Rome during a three-year honeymoon in Europe, William Butler Johnston and his wife, Anne, spent four years building an 18,000-square-foot Italian Renaissance Revival mansion that is now a National Historic Landmark. See all three levels, including 12 rooms, of the Hay House decorated for the Holidays following the historic traditions of the house. Considered the most advanced antebellum building in America for its style, craftsmanship and technological innovations, the magnificent seven-level Hay House boasts beautiful 18th-Century furnishings, Italian Carrara Marble fireplaces, some of the country's finest examples of marbleized and trompe l'oeil finishes, a music room with a 30-foot clerestory ceiling, exquisite plaster work with 24-karat gold leafing and spectacular stained glass. The mansion is called Hay House for its last owners and residents, the P.L. Hay family, who conveyed the property in 1977 to The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. Hay House is open daily for guided tours in Visit Macon.
