Single $5,168 Donation Gives Lynden Heritage Museum Fundraising Campaign an Early Boost

The Lynden Heritage Museumโ€™s effort to raise $100,000 received a major early contribution overnight Saturday and Sunday, providing immediate support as the organization works through one of the most difficult financial periods in its 50-year history.

A donation of $5,168.32 was made July 26 by a contributor publicly listed on the museumโ€™s campaign page but wishes to remain anonymous. The gift accounted for more than 95% of the $5,426.96 raised during the campaignโ€™s opening stage.

Other publicly listed donors included W.K and T.L, who each contributed $103.72, B.C, who donated $25, and L.S, who gave $26.20.

Together, the five donations brought the campaign to about 6% of its overall goal as of Saturday afternoon.

The fundraiser was launched after museum leaders warned that reduced funding from the City of Lynden, remaining expenses from a November 2025 fire which BMN reported on at the time and rising operating costs had left the organization in a fragile financial position.

Although insurance covered portions of the fire recovery, the museum said some damage and restoration expenses were not covered. The organization was forced to use reserves and operating funds that had taken years to build.

The museum has already eliminated staff positions, including its curator and collections manager, reduced public hours and cut nearly all spending considered nonessential. Leaders said those steps helped stretch the remaining funds but would not provide the long-term stability needed to operate the museum and care for its collections.

Money raised through the campaign is expected to support daily operations, preservation work, educational visits and the continued protection of artifacts documenting the history of Lynden, northern Whatcom County and the surrounding region.

The museumโ€™s current public hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. It is closed Wednesday and Thursday.

Campaign details and donation information are available through the Lynden Heritage Museumโ€™s official website. https://www.lyndenheritagemuseum.org/support/supportthemuseum

We had the opportunity to tour the museum yesterday with Jennifer and Hayden, and what a wonderful experience. Throughout several floors of exhibits, there is so much to discoverโ€”from a restored dentist's office and historic jail to an impressive buggy collection and countless local artifacts, there's something around every corner. If you're looking for a fun family adventure this summer, this is one worth adding to your list. And even better, admission is free for kids 18 and under!

It is inspiring to see how this museum continues to preserve and share our community's story, and how hard their dedicated team of staff and volunteers has worked after their recent fire. Thank you to everyone at the Lynden Heritage Museum for protecting and celebrating our local history, and thank you to our amazing community. For 50 years, the Lynden Heritage Museum has been more than a museum, it has been the keeper of our communityโ€™s story.
โ€‹It exists because, five decades ago, a passionate group of volunteers, generous donors, and the City of Lynden shared a vision: to preserve the rich history of Lynden, Washington, and Whatcom County so that future generations could understand where they came from and appreciate the people, places, and events that shaped this community
Today, that mission is at risk. The Lynden Heritage Museum is facing one of the most difficult chapters in its history. A combination of significant, unexpected funding cuts from the City of Lynden and the devastating financial impact of the November 2025 fire has left the museum in an extremely fragile position. While insurance helped cover portions of the recovery, many restoration costs and damages were not covered, forcing the museum to use the reserves and operating funds that had taken years to build.
At the same time, rising insurance premiums, increasing utility costs, and the everyday expenses of operating a museum continue to place tremendous strain on our already limited resources.

We have made painful decisions to stretch every dollar as far as possible. Staff positions have been eliminated, including the museum curator and collections managerโ€”roles that are absolutely vital to the care, preservation, and daily operation of the museumโ€™s collections. Museum hours have been reduced from seven days a week to just three, and nearly all non-essential spending has been cut. These measures were necessary, but they are no longer enough to ensure the museumโ€™s future.
