Lynchburg Art Club & Gallery

Lynchburg Art Club & Gallery Designated 501(c)(3) since 1963. At the same time, he was instructor of art at Lynchburg High School and a professor of art at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College.

Lynchburg Art Club (LAC) has promoted and celebrated visual fine art in Central Virginia since its founding in 1895 as one of the oldest clubs of its kind in the country. The Lynchburg Art Club (LAC) was formed in March, 1895, under the direction of Bernhard Gutmann, who was the first supervisor of art in the Lynchburg Public School System. Mr. Gutmann, Mrs. John A. Mahood, and Louise Smith helped

the Club thrive in the early years with exhibitions, classes for members, and opportunities for community participation. We are proud that the tradition of these original goals continues today. The Lynchburg Art Club was incorporated in 1961, and the present location, 1011 Rivermont Avenue, was purchased. The first floor is handicapped accessible for everyone to enjoy the monthly exhibits in the galleries. The second floor allows ample classroom space and the third floor has been reclaimed as an environmental stable storage area with more studio space.

🏛️ THE LEGACY OF GEORGIA MORGAN
Georgia Morgan joined the Lynchburg Art Club in the mid-1920s and quickly became one of its most impactful members. In fall 1926, she invited fellow members to her studio, establishing the LAC's first permanent home and formal structure. Her initiative helped shape the club into what it is today — monthly exhibits and annual student critiques by art experts soon followed. The annual Georgia Morgan Civic Art Show, held each February, honors her lasting dedication to the arts. The show is open to all artists within 35 miles of Lynchburg, and we are proud to celebrate its 94th year!
