KENNETH WAS NO SLEEPY VILLAGE as evidenced by these photos from the Kenneth file. Who could tell us some history on these businesses? Where were they located? When did they close/change owners/etc.? The Pioneer Store looks a lot like a building still in Kenneth. Is it the same building? Tell us what you know.

TWO IMPORTANT BUSINESSES IN HILLS were the Merchants Hotel and the Crescent newspaper. These sketches appeared in the Rock County News of December 20, 1899 in an edition about many of the area businesses. On display at the History Center are the safe from the Crescent office and a visitor registration book from the Merchants Hotel signed by William Jennings Bryan.

BEAVER CREEK WAS BOOMING back in the day. We aren't sure exactly what day it was, but this photo show the interior of Dunbar's Store. If you needed a hat, this would have been the place to shop! Can anyone tell us where Dunbar's Store was located? When did it close?

GOOD SERVICE OIL COMPANY was located on the northwest corner of Warren and Kniss. This 1951 photo shows the original building, which was replaced with the current building on that corner. Some of you will remember this as the corner where Smooky's Pizza once did business.

WHO'S WHO IN TALES FROM THE GRAVES
One of the best parts of Tales from the Graves is the variety. We have called on a diverse group of actors to depict our characters. Click on each photo to see who will be portraying Lilly Kille, Father Francis Sampson, Captain Lenore (Sandager) Hansen, and Lieutenant Frank Ferguson.

ROCK COUNTY HALL OF FAME 2026: AMERICA 250 EDITION
The Rock County Historical Society is excited to announce the inductees to the Rock County Hall of Fame 2026. The Rock County Historical Society recently approved the induction of six new members to the Rock County Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame Committee met on April 2 and chose the following six Rock Countians for this honor: Dale Frakes, Hugo Goehle, Marvin Helling, Elmer Hovland, Emily Lodine-Overgaard, and Harrison White. Harrison White fought in the Civil War and is considered the father of Beaver Creek. Three World War II vets, Dale Frakes, Marvin Helling, and Elmer Hovland, join the elite group. Emily Lodine-Overgaard was internationally acclaimed for her operatic skills. Hugo Goehle is a household name in the Hills-Beaver Creek school district because of his incredible coaching record and his mentoring skills. We are proud to honor these individuals with a program at the Generations Event Center on August 2 at 1:00 with a reception to follow at the History Center. Open the pictures for the names of the inductees.

TALKING IN CODE
Imagine working in a highly secretive mission for the U. S. government and then keeping it secret for fifty years. That's part of the story of Captain Lenore Sandager Hansen, a WWII veteran employed in the work of the Code Talkers, the Navajo speakers who helped create and use the codes employed to prevent the enemy from learning battle strategy. Find out more at this year's Tales from the Graves!

THE ENGEBRETSEN BUILDING stands on the southwest corner of Main and McKenzie. These photos from 1956 show it and the Luverne Federal Savings and Loan, which stood toward the west part of the block on the south side of Main Street between Cedar and Freeman. The first building on that block was Rock Cafe, then LFS&L, and the tall building was Rober's Pool Hall. The buildings in that picture were all torn down and replaced.

SYMBOL OF FREEDOM
Our flag has changed much from the founding of the United States of America. Come to the History Center to see the Siouxland Heritage Museums' flag exhibit to learn the history and read interesting stories about the flag. We have augmented the exhibit with our own interests as well. Stop in to see it before it leaves us in early May.
