The Drouhard family is making apple c***r and apple butter the old-fashioned way in front of the museum today until 4 PM!

Both are examples of intangible cultural heritage — the traditions, skills, and knowledge passed down through generations that remain an important part of our community’s heritage.

The best way to preserve these traditions is to keep practicing and sharing them, and we’re grateful to the Drouhard family for helping do just that!

The museum recently partnered with the College of Wooster’s Program in Archaeology for fieldwork at the Copus Hill Historic Site. Wooster students, under the direction of Prof. Ricardo Higelin Ponce de León, worked alongside CRF staff and interns to gain hands-on archaeological experience while beginning a new investigation of the site.

This initial fieldwork focused on better understanding the location and organization of the Copus family cabin, the nearby spring, and other areas used by the family. The team also hopes its work will add to our understanding of the people involved and the difficult events that unfolded at Copus Hill.

Now students will analyze their findings—including pottery shards, nails, glasswork, and other manmade artifacts—in the archaeology laboratory. We thank the college and students for their assistance, and look forward to future collaboration!

Thanks to all who attended our Workman Cabin Open House this past weekend! Visitors were able to explore the cabin, learn more about those who built it and the many uses it has served over the years, as well as sample cookies from a historic recipe, and try their hand at writing with feather quills and steel nib pens!

This Day in History:

On July 20, 1969, after a journey of nearly 240,000 miles, the Apollo 11 Lunar Module Eagle landed on the surface of the Moon. A few hours later, Neil Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface, followed by Buzz Aldrin, while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module Columbia.

The Moon landing was the culmination of one of the most ambitious undertakings in human history. Less than a decade earlier, the United States had not yet sent an astronaut into orbit. By 1969, the efforts of more than 400,000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel had made it possible to land people on another world—and return them safely home.

More than half a century later, Apollo 11 remains a remarkable reminder of what can be achieved through ingenuity, determination, and a willingness to pursue goals that once seemed impossible. It wasn’t simply a milestone in space exploration—it was a defining moment in world history.

Notice on Museum Hours:

The museum is currently open 10-4 Monday through Thursday, until July 4. Following that we will resume Monday through Friday hours.

Saturdays: The museum is open Saturdays 9-12 until Labor Day weekend, with extended hours for July 4 open from 10-4.

The Workman Cabin will also be open select Saturday's during the Loudonville Farmers Market.

Applications are now open for vendors and food trucks at the Mohican Christkindlmarkt!

🎄 Vendor applications are now open for the 2026 Mohican Christkindlmarkt! 🎄

After drawing more than 8,500 visitors during our inaugural season, the market returns to downtown Loudonville for two festive weekends: December 4–5 and December 11–12, 2026.

We are currently seeking artisan vendors, handmade goods, holiday décor, specialty foods, food trucks, drink vendors, and other unique seasonal offerings to help transform downtown Loudonville into a traditional European-inspired Christmas market.

While all applications are welcome, priority may be given to vendors offering German, Alpine, and other old-world holiday-inspired products and menu items.

Vendor space is limited, and applications are reviewed through a curated selection process.

It’s been a busy week already at the museum! Yesterday, our team trained with Ohio Memory staff as we begin the exciting process of bringing our collections online—free and accessible to the public. We can’t wait to share these stories, images, and artifacts with a wider audience.

Today, that mission continues in person as our volunteers welcome more than 150 students for tours. For many, it’s their first time seeing how a typewriter works or hearing a phonograph in action—small moments that make history feel real. Thanks to our volunteers, these experiences are happening every day.
