Leading Fluxus member and “Father of Video Art” Nam June Paik spent decades exploring the impacts of television and other mass communication technologies on our understanding of time, space, movement and perception. In "Paik-Davis Radio" (1975) the artist brings these concerns together in a concise sculptural readymade produced from recycled media technologies.

The work features an antique radio cabinet topped with a white JVC Videosphere television monitor, a mid-century curiosity mimicking an astronaut’s helmet that Paik used in other works, including his iconic "TV Buddha." The monitor is set to play a stream of classic television, originally dialed to broadcast Channel 3. Meanwhile, early photographs of the work show Paik and fellow video artist Shigeko Kubota holding video cameras that connect back to the sculpture.

The sculpture is an early comment on the increasingly message-saturated and mediatized nature of contemporary life and the possibilities for individual response. Traded to media artist, critic and scholar Douglas Davis, who gave the work its title, it also serves as an endearing symbol of the network of artistic exchange that Paik participated in throughout his career.

We invite you to experience "Paik-Davis Radio" in person, Tuesday - Saturday, 10am - 6pm, in 'L.A. Louver Celebrates 50 Years,' on view through 14 June 2025.

In celebration of World Poetry Day, we invite you to join us for a closer look at Wallace Berman’s Semina 🔍️

Between 1955 and 1964, California artist Wallace Berman (1929-1976) carefully selected drawings, photographs, collages, and poems to assemble nine issues of his handcrafted journal "Semina." Once compiled, "Semina" was sent in the mail or personally given to select friends and fellow-travelers who were part of the diverse counter-cultural scenes in Los Angeles and throughout the United States.

Poets and writers included in Berman’s "Semina" include Charles Baudelaire, Allen Ginsberg, Herman Hesse, Mike McClure, Bob Kaufman, and Charles Bukowski, among others. Berman’s selections reveal his longtime support of Beat poets, as well as his interest in mysticism and game theory.

Enjoy these selections from "Semina," and come see the work in person, Tuesday - Saturday, 10am - 6pm, in 'L.A. Louver Celebrates 50 Years,’ through 14 June 2025.

Let's take a trip back in time 🌀

L.A. Louver has operated on the same block in Venice Beach since the 1970s, making it one of the longest-established art galleries on the West Coast.

Founded in 1975, L.A. Louver opened it's first exhibition in January 1976 at 55 N Venice Blvd (next door to our current building). This primary outpost was joined by a second Venice location at 77 Market St in 1981. A Louver shuttle was known to run back and forth between the two spaces during openings. 🥂

An East Coast endeavor followed: Louver Gallery, New York opened in October of 1989 at 130 Prince St, which operated concurrent to the L.A. Louver program until its closure in 1993.

Following the closure of the galleries at 55 N Venice & 77 Market St in December of 1994, L.A. Louver's bespoke gallery space - one of the first of its kind in Los Angeles - built by Frederick Fisher & Partners opened January 1995 at 45 N Venice Blvd.

This first exhibition at 45 N Venice, 'Richard Deacon: Not Yet Beautiful,' is honored with the display of Deacon's "Alphabet E" (2011) on the exterior of the second-floor Skyroom space in our current exhibition 'L.A. Louver Celebrates 50 Years.' 🌐

'L.A. Louver Celebrates 50 Years' is on view through 14 June 2025. We invite you to visit us Tuesday - Saturday, 10am - 6pm.

L.A. Louver is delighted to present new artwork by Gajin Fujita at Frieze Los Angeles 2025.

In the diamond-shaped "Pretty Please..." (2024), the energetic interaction between a ukiyo-e style dragon and a cherubic putto embodies the dichotomy and exchange between Eastern and Western cultures that has shaped Gajin Fujita’s artistic journey.

A Japanese-American artist and Los Angeles native, Fujita creates a dynamic scene using experimental spray-paint techniques and a vibrant palette inspired by West Coast sunsets. The work depicts a contemporary allegory for climate change in which an angel pleads with the fiery Wood Dragon (the animal sign of the 2024 Lunar New Year) to spare humanity from impending environmental catastrophe.

The accompanying study of "Pretty Please..." offers insight into Fujita’s unique process of mark making. In his studies, paper stencils retain ghost images of what appears in the painting; they are elegant, spare negatives of the painted image.

See work by Gajin Fujita, Rebecca Campbell, Heather Gwen Martin, Alison Saar and Ben Jackel at L.A. Louver's booth at Frieze Los Angeles, Stand C12.

In the Spring of 2025, Fondation Louis Vuitton will open an exhibition of works by David Hockney in a presentation that will take over their entire building in Paris.

Exceptional in its scale and originality, the exhibition will be held from 9 April to 1 September 2025 and will bring together more than 400 of Hockney's works from 1955 to 2025.

Paintings from international, institutional, and private collections, as well as works from the artist's own studio and foundation are included in what will be the largest solo exhibition of artwork by David Hockney.

There are no words. Sending enormous love to everyone in our community feeling the devastating impact of the fires.

We are immensely grateful to report that our team and building have remained safe throughout this time. 🤍

The gallery remains closed for this period of time as we navigate the installation of our upcoming exhibition and the crisis at large, individually and as a city.
