Sam Zumian’s “illusion” triptych (2022) at the Yerevan Modern Art Museum of Armenia. Donated by Mooradian Gallery in 2025 for permanent exposition.

Tour this incredible museum while visiting Yerevan, Armenia. It is one of the best museums of Armenia with an incredible and diverse collection of Modern Art. The museum was founded by Mooradian Gallery mentor & friend, Henrik Igityan.

Illusion (2022) is a prominent, large-scale contemporary oil painting created by the Armenian-American artist Sam Zumian (Samvel Hambardzumyan).

The piece highlights Zumian’s signature style, which is highly recognized for its expressive lines, dream-like subconscious themes, and dynamic physical motion. His paintings use a distinct, vibrant color palette to challenge fixed forms, creating a powerful tension between figuration and abstraction. In Illusion, he presents his own creative interpretation of reality, inviting viewers into an atmospheric world built on personal findings and memory.

Sam Zumian was born in Yerevan, Armenia, in 1953, where he graduated from the Yerevan State College of Fine Arts and the Yerevan State Institute of Fine Arts. He has been living and working in Los Angeles, California, since the 2000s. His massive, emotionally charged canvases are regularly exhibited internationally and are represented locally by the Mooradian Gallery on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.

Emil Kazaz’s famed “Judith” (1995) at the Yerevan Modern Art Museum donated by Mooradian Gallery in 2004.

Emil Kazaz’s “Judith” (1995) is a celebrated bronze sculpture by the internationally acclaimed Armenian-American artist Emil Kazaz (born Emanuel Ghazazian). It is considered one of his most recognized and awarded modern artworks, highlighting the biblical story of Judith and Holofernes.

Description & Style: The sculpture is known for its “round,” “bodacious,” and “robust” depiction of the biblical heroine, often portrayed in a contrapposto pose. Kazaz’s interpretation often features a victorious and confident Judith with a subtle, “benign smirk”.

Key Version (1995): A 1995 version of this sculpture was donated by the Mooradian Gallery in 2004 to the permanent collection of the Yerevan Modern Art Museum of Armenia.”

Judith IV” (2009/2016): Other versions, such as “Judith IV” (2009), have been created in bronze with 24K gold leaf.

Exhibitions: The work has been shown in the Los Angeles art scene and featured in various gallery posts, including Mooradian Gallery, which handles his work.

Interpretation: Critics have noted that Kazaz “gently subverts” the traditional, often violent, story by focusing on a sensual yet triumphant depiction of the character.
