California has a ghost town and it is one of our most extraordinary state parks. 👻🏚️

Bodie State Historic Park is a perfectly preserved ghost town in the Eastern Sierra, abandoned in the early 20th century after its gold and silver mines ran dry. Today, 100-plus wooden buildings remain in a state of 'arrested decay' — frozen in time exactly as their last residents left them. Rusty mining equipment. Half-played card games. Empty bottles still on the bar.

Bodie has a reputation as one of California's most haunted locations. According to legend, anyone who removes an artifact from the park will be cursed until it is returned. The park rangers have a collection of letters from visitors who took something and mailed it back — along with accounts of the terrible luck that followed.

Visitors are advised: look, photograph, and appreciate. But do not take anything home. 👀💚

The National Park Service is asking the public to provide information for more than 20 individuals who may be missing or unaccounted for following a significant flash flood in Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area on August 29.

If you know of hikers or backpackers who were in the Bright Angel Creek corridor on August 29, or if you had a campground reservation in the affected area, please contact the NPS Investigative Services Branch (ISB).

This includes people who may have been:
• Traveling the North Kaibab Trail from the North Kaibab Trailhead to Phantom Ranch
• Staying at Bright Angel Campground or Cottonwood Campground
• Traveling through “the Box” north of Phantom Ranch

One of Cerro Gordo's old, unrestored cabins has survived decades of weathering at Cerro Gordo's 8400' elevation. This cabin is near the Safegard Tunnel, above the Hunter House and below the original alignment of the Yellow Grade Road.

During Cerro Gordo's silver era in the 1870's Owens Lake was still a viable and navigable waterway (albeit alkaline water) plied by two steamships, the Bessie Brady and Molly Stevens, that transported charcoal and bullion bars across from Swansea to Cartago.

🔥 Important Update: Seasonal fire restrictions are now in effect for BLM-managed public lands in the Eastern Sierra, covering Inyo, Mono, and portions of Alpine counties. These restrictions are in place due to dry conditions and high wildland fire danger.

Restrictions include no campfires or open flames outside of agency-provided fire rings at developed campgrounds, no smoking except in enclosed vehicles or buildings, no target shooting, and no motorized vehicles off designated roads or trails. As always, fireworks are prohibited on all BLM lands.

Help us prevent human-caused wildfires — 95% of California wildfires are caused by people. Please plan ahead, use caution, and recreate responsibly.
