Sunday night post.
So anti-algorithmic

Los Angeles, CA — Pio Pico, LA is pleased to announce the launch of The $999 Store, a new hybrid project dedicated to small-scale design, furniture, and artist-made objects — each available for $999 or less.
Housed in a dedicated room at the Pio Pico gallery and mirrored online through curated releases, The $999 Store offers a new framework for collecting and exhibiting. The project invites artists, designers, and independent makers to create limited editions that explore the boundary between functionality and form, material and concept — always under one constraint: nothing may exceed $999.
The first drop opens Saturday, December 20.

Stay tuned.

Calamity and Dismissal
In Calamity and Dismissal, Eric Wesley converts a pun into a system. “Clams” and “Missiles” — calamity and dismissal, feminine and masculine — structure a field of desire, collision, and absurd logic. Known for his analytic humor and use of material precision as philosophical bait, Wesley stages a theater of implication where language folds back on itself. Meaning is produced through misfire, attraction through recoil. The result is both erotic and deadpan: an exhibition that turns the double entendre into a medium of its own.

Vejvi   -   Wesley × RIVINGTON roi Rebis   -   Spadoni

Tonight 6-8 PM

The 25th anniversary of 9/11 approaches—smoke ’em if you’ve got ’em.
The sensory takeover of the venue and the provocation of the proposed Gesamtkunstwerk don’t just transcend the idea of a gallery; they convert the space into proving grounds, a templum under the auspices of RIVINGTON roi Rebis—or whichever alias the designer chooses to deploy. Before you step inside, there’s visual and olfactory evidence that a transgressive act is afoot. Seemingly orderly and compliant with social and legal authority, a series of metamodern ashtrays populate the stage. Gridded, abject, and attractive at once, they merge with design and décor (art vs. product?) as the scene grows from limbic to entertainment to participation—whether by smoking, leaving, watching, multiplying yourself in mirrors, thinking about style and behavior, or building a wardrobe. Shopping—why you’re really here—still smoking.
From être amoureux to Thanatos, mass culture tutors us in appetite and risk; the events of 9/11 extend that lesson. The point here is not endorsement—of smoking, terrorism, capitalism, Americanism, or any other “-ism”—but to mark the exponential growth of the absurd persuasion. It should not be immediately clear that the ashtrays are scale approximations of the Freedom Tower, deployed at scale (number-wise) as product. With an edition of 9 + II, steady growth and progress stand as one possible answer to the questions above.
—Eric Wesley, Standard Modeling

On the occasion of Sarah Brooks’s () takeover of the two main rooms at Pio Pico, LA—presenting “Caribisch Blauw”—the large room features a focused presentation of new works by gallery artists:
Eric Wesley () × RIVINGTON roi Rebis (), “Standard Modeling (Freedom Tower)” — a precision-milled aluminum column that reads as model and vessel, toggling between ashtray, decor, and deadpan monument. Produced in brushed and mirrored series; ed. 9 + II.
Torbjorn Vejvi () — two relief wall works that shift with light, hovering between painting and sculpture; an early glimpse of his forthcoming solo at Pio Pico.
Federico Spadoni (), Elliptical Table — a ribbed, elliptical form anchoring the room as both working furniture and formal study.
Opening reception Saturday, 6–8 pm.
