Join us on Saturday, October 10, at 1:00 pm for Poets in the Grove, an afternoon of live readings in the Pine Grove at Barnsdall Art Park, presented in conjunction with Susan Silton: Diving into the Wreck. Emceed by Susan Silton, the program celebrates Civilized Voices (2026), Silton’s site-specific public artwork inspired by Aline Barnsdall’s socially and politically engaged billboards of the 1940s. Hear readings including the newly commissioned poems by Los Angeles-area writers Rocío Carlos, Erin Marie Lynch, Lynne Thompson, and Terry Wolverton, which appear on hand-painted billboards installed among the park’s pine trees. Bring a blanket and a picnic, settle into the grove, and enjoy an afternoon of poetry, art, and conversation in the park.

Join guest curator Andy Campbell and LAMAG Curator Nancy Meyer immediately following In everything there is a trace for a Curator’s Dive through Diving into the Wreck. The installation brings together ten participants at ten manual typewriters around a circular table, retyping Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower without ink, leaving only the imprint of the keys on the page.

Following the typing, Campbell and Meyer will lead an informal tour and conversation about Susan Silton’s diverse, four-decade practice, how the exhibition came together, and what’s next for the artist, including her forthcoming exhibition at the Blaffer Art Museum. This is a unique opportunity to hear directly from the curators about the ideas, works, and process behind the exhibition.

Interested in becoming part of Susan Silton: Diving Into the Wreck?

Registration is now open for one-hour collective typing sessions at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery!

Gather around Silton’s interconnected, three-legged tables and collaboratively retype Octavia E. Butler’s landmark novel Parable of the Sower (1993) on manual typewriters in stencil mode—without ink. The work transforms reading and writing into a tactile, shared experience, asking participants to slow down, encounter Butler’s language closely, and contribute to a living work of art.

Set in a dystopian 2020s Los Angeles, Parable of the Sower follows a young woman imagining new ways of living amid social and environmental upheaval. More than three decades after its publication, Butler’s visionary novel continues to resonate with the present. Through collective typing, participants are invited to consider how stories shape our relationships to one another in a changing and uncertain world.

Participation details

Open to participants ages 12 and older; all skill levels are welcome.

No typing experience is required, though familiarity with a keyboard or manual typewriter may be helpful.

Each session lasts approximately one hour.

Participants will receive a letterpress certificate of participation signed by the artist at the conclusion of the session.

Designated parking is available for participants; please allow sufficient time to park and get settled before your session.

Sessions may be photographed for program documentation and promotional purposes. If you prefer not to be photographed, please notify a staff member or the photographer.

Please reserve a session only if you are able to attend. If your plans change, we appreciate advance notice whenever possible so that another participant may take your place.

DCA and the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of Betye Saar.

For more than six decades, Saar was an essential part of the cultural life of Los Angeles. Her art, generosity, imagination, helped shape generations of artists, Los Angeles, and beyond. 

Saar’s history with the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery began in 1964 with the 12th Annual All City Outdoor Art Festival. She returned to the Gallery in 1974 for 𝘞𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘊𝘰𝘢𝘴𝘵 ’74: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦, in 1976 for 𝘈 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯 𝘓𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘒𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘑𝘳., and in 1981 for 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘔𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘛𝘰𝘶𝘳, a collaboration with her daughters Alison and Lezley Saar titled 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘍𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴: 𝘈 𝘙𝘰𝘰𝘮 𝘍𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘴 (installation image above). 

Her connection to the Watts community, particularly through another DCA facility, the Watt Towers Arts Center Campus, was equally formative. As a young girl, Saar lived in Watts with her grandmother and was deeply inspired by Simon Rodia’s Watts Towers and the possibilities of transforming everyday materials into something extraordinary. This was a formative experience that shaped her artistic practice, particularly her use of a variety of discarded materials. Her lifelong relationship to the Campus as a supporter and exhibiting artist remains an important part of the artistic history of Los Angeles and the work of the DCA.

We are deeply grateful to Betye Saar for all that she gave to this city: her art, her curiosity, her humor, her generosity, and her unwavering belief in the transformative power of art and social change.

Thank you, Betye, for helping make Los Angeles a more vibrant, expansive, and creative city. Your presence, work, and spirit will continue to live on in the artists, communities, and institutions you helped shape.
