“To Share a Stomach”

The Brick, 518 N Western Avenue

“To Share a Stomach” is an exhibition shaped by proposals, instructions, and written correspondences sent by artists currently living and working in Iran. It was initiated in March 2026, when the country was seized by daily bombardment and the longest blackout in the internet’s history. The works in the exhibition have been executed and interpreted by artists performing as proxies on behalf of those constrained by circumstances not of their making.

Organized by Aram Moshayedi, with invaluable consultation from Yasaman Aeini, Negar Azimi, Minoo Emadi, Niloufar Emamifar, Sina Ghadaksaz, Sheida Ghomashchi, Ali Hassanzadeh, Hormoz Hematian, Nazafarin Lotfi, Tala Madani, Azar Mahmoudian, Mahan Moalemi, Shabahang Tayyari, Ashkan Zahraei, and Tirdad Zolghadr.

Come hear a cast of marvelous actors read the latest draft of a new play in progress. “CAN’T STOP” follows a group of TV and film artists and a young wandering unhoused poet in an assisted living home. The play explores the complex inner lives of characters who thrive, flirt, tease, take drugs, battle, fall in love, and have s*x with each other, all with the goal of continuing to live no matter what.

Art Historian Darby English and Hamza Walker discuss Kara Walker’s Unmanned Drone.

Darby English is the Carl Darling Buck Professor of Art History at the University of Chicago, where since 2003 he has taught modern and contemporary art and cultural studies. His books include How to See a Work of Art in Total Darkness (2007), 1971: A Year in the Life of Color (2016), To Describe a Life: Notes from the Intersection of Art and Race Terror (2019), and Charles Ray: Adam and Eve (2024). To Describe a Life won the 2020 Book Prize from the Association for the Study of Arts of the Present and the College Art Association’s 2020 Frank Jewett Mather Award. English was the Louis Kahn Resident in the History of Art at the American Academy in Rome in 2024.
