Tom of Finland Foundation

Tom of Finland Foundation As Tom had established worldwide recognition as the master of homo-erotic art, the Foundation's original purpose was to preserve his vast catalog of work.

Founded in 1984 by Durk Dehner and Tom of Finland, the Tom of Finland Foundation preserves Tom’s work and champions erotic art worldwide, educating the public and promoting more open, tolerant views on sexuality. Tom of Finland Foundation: Nearly Four Decades Protecting, Preserving and Promoting Erotic Art

In 1984, the nonprofit Tom of Finland Foundation was established by Durk Dehner and his fri

end Tom of Finland. Several years later the scope was widened to offer a safe haven for all erotic art in response to rampant discrimination against art that portrayed sexual behavior or generated a sexual response. . The Foundation is located in a residence built in 1911, in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, and was purchased by Durk Dehner in 1979. Beginning in 1980, through to his death in 1991, Tom called this residence his California home, with his studio on the 3rd floor. Eventually, the house became known as “TOM House”. Now, Durk and his colleague, Sharp; along with Marc, the curator; plus two artists-in- residence live at TOM House. In 2016, TOM House was declared a City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. ToFF provides support for the upkeep of TOM House and Durk has willed his home to the Foundation. Today ToFF continues in its efforts of educating the public as to the cultural merits of erotic art and in promoting healthier, more tolerant attitudes about sexuality. ToFF achieves this by:
• Museum, Archive and Library – The Foundation holds a permanent collection of more than 1,000 original works by Tom and another 1,500 works by hundreds of other erotic artists. ToFF also has a library and archive at TOM House, containing over 500,000 books, periodicals, film and other forms of erotic images. The Foundation is one of the largest repositories of erotic art and is frequented by academic researchers.
• Artist-in-Residence Program – The Foundation hosts erotic artists from around the world who live at TOM House for up to 3 months, providing them support and access to extensive source material for artistic inspiration.
• Exhibitions – The artist-in-residence program culminates with an exhibition of the artist's work created while staying at TOM House. In addition, ToFF hosts, curates and supports exhibitions throughout the world of both Tom’s work and that of other erotic artists.
• Community Events – The Foundation sponsors numerous events throughout the year at TOM House and off-site, including monthly life drawing sessions, the annual TOM’s Bar, and the yearly Tom of Finland Art and Culture Festival. These events educate the public as to the importance of erotic art in our culture; the Foundation’s mission.
• Merchandise – The Foundation licenses Tom’s images and name to various enterprises, including book publishers. Licensed products help promote Tom’s art work and keeps his legacy alive. Income from sales provides just a small portion of the total funds needed to support TOM's Foundation.
• Safe Gathering Space – TOM House and the Foundation have created an inclusive environment for the LGBTQ+ community and their supporters, providing a warm, safe, fun space for people from all walks of life, sexual orientation and expression who enjoy erotic art. We can not do this important work without your support. The Foundation relies on financial support, and the time and effort of volunteers from the community. We want you to be part of our family. We offer our Membership program and pursue fundraising, major donor, sponsorship and bequeath outreach.

This International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, we’re asking our community to help protect Q***r art and history.

At a time when LGBTQ+ expression continues to face censorship and erasure, Tom of Finland Foundation remains committed to preserving one of the world’s largest archives of Q***r art and keeping TOM House open as a living space for artists, culture, and community.

But we cannot do this work alone.

If Tom of Finland, TOM House, or Q***r art has ever made you feel seen, inspired, or connected, please consider making a donation today. Your support helps preserve LGBTQ+ artwork, sustain our historic home, and protect Q***r creative expression for generations to come.

According to Tom of Finland Foundation, these materials formed part of a larger archive through which the artist developed his now-iconic visual language. Cuttings were organized into categories, annotated, sometimes drawn over and reworked. Some photographs he had taken himself. They functioned as working documents, but also as repositories of desire. Seen in this light, the collages are not ancillary to the drawings; they are their infrastructure.

Tom of Finland is the artist name of Finnish Touko Laaksonen (1920, Kaarina – 1991, Helsinki). He signed his erotic work “Tom,” and when his drawings were first published in 1957, the now world-famous Tom of Finland was born. “Touko Laaksonen” remained his formal name for family and colleagues, while friends and fans simply call him “Tom.” His given name, "Touko", comes from his birth on 8th May 1920 on Finland’s southwest coast—Toukokuu is the Finnish word for May.

He transformed his attraction into images of confident, self-possessed men, building a visual language of desire, strength, and freedom that continues to resonate today 🖤

The “SEX NOW” exhibition in Düsseldorf wraps on 3rd May 2026.

Since September 2025, the exhibition has invited audiences into a bold, creative dialogue about sexuality and society. Today we're spotlighting "KINKY," a space where pleasure, control, and expression collide and are redefined.
