On September 26, the Arts Internship Program (AIP) hosted the annual Art Summit in the neighborhood, Little Tokyo. Interns participating in AIP explored the rich tapestry of arts and culture in Little Tokyo, while also getting some time to network with one another and arts professionals from across the region. This summit is in addition to the 400 hours of paid work at a LA County Art or Cultural Institution providing students with experience, understanding, and transferable skills relevant to careers in the arts, the creative economy, and engagement in public life.

The event is hosted in collaboration with the Marina del Rey Historical Society, who will present on the history of Marina del Rey, highlighting its recreational and maritime history.

The Department of Arts and Culture is seeking well-qualified individuals to fill Manager, Arts and Culture vacancies throughout the department. These individuals will manage and supervise, through support staff, the development, implementation, and administrative activities of a portfolio of comprehensive, highly complex, multi-layered initiatives, and specialized arts and culture programs.

The ideal candidates will have professional experience within the Los Angeles County arts and culture ecosystem, including familiarity with local arts policies, initiatives, and community needs. The Department is also seeking individuals with experience related to cultural equity, diversity, inclusion, and/or experience working with underserved communities or populations.

The County of Los Angeles is asking residents to share their priorities for County programs and services through a series of short online surveys, open now through October 31.

Residents are invited to identify the services they value most, recommend programs for increased or reduced funding, highlight underserved communities and geographic areas, propose new services and suggest improvements to service delivery. Surveys include a countywide questionnaire plus surveys for each of the 39 County departments. Residents can fill out surveys for as many departments as they like.

Surveys are anonymous unless respondents proactively choose to share their contact information. Responses will be reviewed by departments and used to inform budget planning for Fiscal Year 2027-28, which begins July 1, 2027.

We are pleased to announce that artist Tanya Aguiñiga has been selected as the Artist-in-Residence with the LA County Cultural Climate Commons: Community Memory Lab & Living Archive. This community archiving initiative responds to the need for cultural preservation, commemoration, and social connection after the January 2025 wildfires in , and demonstrates models of creative recovery and resilience in response to climate change. The initiative is led by and , in partnership with , the / Altadena Library Foundation, and Los Angeles Public Library/Library Foundation of Los Angeles. It models how cultural institutions can transcend jurisdictional boundaries to center community healing and memory in response to disasters.

During the residency, Tanya will, among other activities, develop a series of collective memory and artmaking workshops for Altadena residents and others impacted by the fires that provide space for creative expression and storytelling, and that foster healing and strengthen community bonds. Community artworks created during workshops may be added to LA County Library’s new digital archive.

Tanya Aguiñiga is an artist, designer, and craftsperson who works with traditional craft materials like natural fibers. Tanya regularly collaborates to create sculptures, installations, performances, and community-based art projects. Tanya holds an MFA in furniture design from and a BA from . She has had major solo exhibitions at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (2018); Museum of Arts and Design, New York (2018). Her work has been included in exhibitions at Annenberg Space for Photography (2019) and Craft and Folk Art Museum (2018), among others. She lives in Los Angeles.

Last week the Los Angeles County Arts Commission held its September meeting in the City of West Hollywood for a Third District site visit. The Arts Commission, an advisory group to the County Board of Supervisors, makes these visits across LA County to connect with local arts and cultural partners and learn more about their work. During the meeting, grantee ’s Executive Director Tony Valenzuela gave a presentation on the organization which is headquartered in West Hollywood. Founded in 1952, One Institute is the oldest active LGBTQ+ organization in the United States and home to the country’s first and only LGBTQ+ history festival, Circa, held each October during LGBTQ+ History Month.

Following the meeting, Commissioners toured STORIES: The AIDS Monument , a public memorial honoring those affected by HIV/AIDS located in the heart of . One Institute is the official steward of STORIES: The AIDS Monument. Through STORIES, we REMEMBER lost loved ones, CELEBRATE the heroic activists and caregivers, and EDUCATE new generations about the history of HIV/AIDS.

Equity in arts education means reaching all young people, even those attending non-traditional schools or living outside of community settings. partners with and community arts partners every year to bring arts education and creative workforce development programs to justice-impacted youth.

At Barry J. Nidorf Secure Youth Treatment Facility, young people learn foundational skills in mural design and public art production with the help of teaching artists from ’s Mural Workforce Academy. They also learn the skills necessary to begin careers as recording engineers and film editors through the Workforce Readiness Apprenticeship Preparedness (WRAP) program led by . At Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, integrates the arts into classrooms by bringing creative skills like silk-screening into the hands of youth.

This Arts Education week, we are proud to share these examples of the creative, workforce, and mentorship opportunities offered to justice-impacted young people here in LA County. September 15 marks the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month. This year we’re celebrating by sharing an artwork created by Los Angeles-based artist Erick Medel .medel. “Our Community” (2024) located at the Hilda L. Solis Aquatic Center honors the residents, landmarks, and shared experiences of the San Gabriel Valley region.

For this mural Medel engaged with community members from the Bassett County Park Senior Center, La Puente High School, and Sparks Elementary School. Their voices and stories inspired community portraits featuring beloved local symbols, including the iconic Donut Hole and the San Gabriel Mountains. “Our Community” reminds us that heritage lives in our neighborhoods, our landmarks, our memories, and in the people who call these places home.

The artwork was originally created as intricate “sewn paintings” using thread, denim, and an industrial sewing machine, the imagery was translated into laminated float glass, creating a colorful community frieze that welcomes everyone who gathers at the Aquatic Center.

Born in Puebla, Mexico, Medel draws deeply from his experiences and connections with family and community, transforming everyday stories into vibrant works of art. Hispanic Heritage Month is nationally recognized each year from September 15 – October 15. Thank you for celebrating with us!

The Bloomberg Arts Internship (BAI) is a paid summer internship program designed for rising public high school seniors. Launched in 2012 by , BAI is the largest program of its kind, connecting students with valuable work experience in the cultural sector while providing essential college preparation training.

The Organizational Grant Program (OGP) provides nonprofit arts organizations with funding so they can address their priority needs and ensure cultural services for diverse communities in .

Community Impact Arts Grant (CIAG) supports arts projects and programming at nonprofit social service and social justice organizations and in municipal departments.
