Good morning, it is Museum Monday, June 8, 2026.
Today we are highlighting the YCC group that visited us last week. They are young adults working for a federally funded youth employment program that engages young people in meaningful work experiences at national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and fish hatcheries while developing an ethic of public land stewardship and civic responsibility. Their visit to the museum was an opportunity for many of them to learn the rich history of Lordsburg and Hidalgo County, with many of them spotting items and names of family members who have contributed to the museum.
The group was fully engaged in learning about local history and with the help of their group leader, Sundi LaMarca Hendrix, enjoyed a scavenger hunt finding meaningful artifacts within the museum.

Since posting this last week, we have discovered a few details regarding this historic safe that was recently donated to the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Museum by Tricia Elbrock, owner of the Valley Mercantile in Animas, New Mexico. This safe was a fixture of the Mercantile for many years.

The safe was manufactured by the American Safe & Vault Co., an independent manufacturer active in the early 20th century with notable offices in Denver, Colorado. This unit features two specific patent dates: October 14, 1890, and June 30, 1891. These patents likely refer to early manganese steel inventions or anti-explosive bolt systems developed during that era.

The safe is also associated with the Gila Valley Bank and Trust Company. Founded in 1900 by Isidore E. Solomon in Solomonville, Arizona, this institution served the early agricultural and mining communities of southeastern Arizona and the surrounding areas along Highway 70.
