CSULB Science Learning Center/ Mobile Science Museum

CSULB Science Learning Center/ Mobile Science Museum The Science Learning Center and Mobile Science Museum are "hands-on" museums where visitors are exposed to elements of both natural and physical sciences. The SLC is open to all visitors Monday through Thursday 8-5.

The Science Learning Center (SLC) is a "hands-on" museum located on the CSU Long Beach campus in the Hall of Science Room 110. The SLC houses many displays and exhibits from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, and Science Education. The concepts of science are most easily understood by direct physical involvement and personal discovery. We have developed the exhibits in the SLC with this in mind. Visitors are encouraged to turn the handles, push the buttons, and twist the k***s to make their own personal discoveries of the science behind the display. When visiting the Science Learning Center, you will find a great many exhibits including a Scanning Electron Microscope, a 750-gallon marine aquarium, a Musser Copernican Planetarium, Wimhurst generator, Vacuum Bell Jar, and Fluorescent Minerals Display, and the Etherwave Theramin. Additional hands-on exploration exhibits include Fossils, Minerals, Butterflies, and Soap Bubbles. Visits to the SLC are welcome between the times of 8am-5pm Monday-Thursday and are designed to highlight the grade-appropriate science curriculum.

Hello friends of the MSM/SLC. The CNSM Dean, Laura Kingsford, has asked us to dismantle the Science Learning Center and get rid of the animals, including the 700 gallon reef aquarium. In addition, we have been told that the Mobile Science Museum will also be disposed of. Students, staff, and visitors alike know how important these outreach programs are, and what they have meant to everyone at CSULB. The SLC and MSM have been an important part of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and University’s outreach program for the past 37 years, and should be promoted, rather than destroyed. Those of you who have gone into education appreciate how important hands-on science is to the learning process. If you agree, I would request that you send an email to the Dean, ([email protected]), and to President Jane Close Conoley,(Tweets @PresConoley) showing your support for these important programs

Got some new clams in the Science Learning Center (SLC) over the weekend! Come and check it out, pictures will be posted soon! HSCI 110, Good Luck.
