One of the strange things about being an artist is discovering that the paintings you love most aren't always the ones other people respond to.

This is one of my favorite pieces I've made—and, interestingly, it's never been one of my biggest attention-getters at shows.

Artists: does this happen to you too? And collectors/viewers—if you had to quantify it, what makes you stop in front of one painting while passing another?

Looking up through the maples at a shrine outside Nara, Japan. 🍁

One of the things I remember most from Japan is the feeling of being surrounded by layers—trees, gardens, architecture, light—all revealing themselves a little at a time. I wanted this painting to hold onto that sense of place, and the feeling of looking up and suddenly realizing your view is framed in light filtered by maples.

Sometimes a path is an invitation.

I’m interested in that moment when a landscape stops feeling like scenery and begins to feel like somewhere you can enter—the grasses leaning inward, flowers appearing in the shadows, and a glimpse of light ahead pulling you forward.

This is what I keep returning to in my paintings: not simply what a place looks like, but the sense of wonder, anticipation, and discovery that comes from moving through it.

But what's beyond the bend?

After two years of running around in my head, a flicker of something imperfect yet still fascinating, found its way onto a a canvas. So many real landscapes seem out of a dream world. After two years you wonder, did I see it? Or dream it?

Glad I didn't give up on it either way. Not even sure if its finished but it was doing a lot of talking so for now I will look and listen.
