Swipe for cool finds and fun facts from this year's City Nature Challenge! โฉ

This annual community science event involves folks from all over the world to observe and document biodiversity in their own backyards.

To participate, people make observations of any organism โ€“ plant, animal, insect and more โ€“ on iNaturalist for a few days in late April. This is followed by an identification phase in early May, where a community of naturalists identifies the species observed.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this yearโ€™s City Nature Challenge! ๐ŸŽ‰ Your findings have become scientific data that our researchers can now use to further study and protect our lands. We look forward to participating with you next year!

Who doesn't like to peek into a neighbor's garden?๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ€

The Garden Conservancy's Open Day Program provides special access to Denver home gardens, including three spots designed by the Gardens' horticulturists, on Saturday, June 13, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.! Additional Denver gardens and locations in other counties are open in June and September. Each location is individually ticketed and proceeds support the Garden Conservancy's national preservation work.

๐Ÿ“SummerHome Garden, designed by Kevin Phillip Williams, manager of horticulture. An empty residential lot was transformed into a stunning xeric pocket garden.
๐Ÿ“Virginia Vale Garden, the home garden of Mike Kintgen, curator of alpine collections. The garden features a collection of native, xeric, rock garden perennials and unusual trees and shrubs.

"In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow, Between the crosses, row on row..."

The red poppy has become a national and global symbol of remembrance and on Memorial Day it is shared and worn to remind us of our fallen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The quote is from the poem "In Flanders Field" written in 1915 by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, M.D. who served on the front lines of World War I. It references the red poppies he saw bloom amongst rubble and bloodshed across battlefields in Belgium. The poem was published and its popularity aided the red poppy in becoming a symbol of remembrance across many nations.

The Gardens' York Street and Chatfield Farms locations are open regular hours today, May 25.
