Thank you to the Arkansas Arts Council for the recognition. It is truly an honor to serve in the natural state.

Congratulations to the one and only Garbo Hearne, who was selected this year to receive our Arts Community Development Award!

Garbo Hearne is the director of Pyramid Art, Books & Custom Framing and Hearne Fine Art. She has advocated for the advancement of African American culture through art and literature for over 30 years.

Since 1988, Hearne has welcomed and promoted both local and national artists and authors to her gallery and bookstore, now located in the historic Dunbar Neighborhood of Little Rock. Hearne’s commitment to the promotion of African American art extends beyond Central Arkansas. The El Dorado native has organized and installed museum exhibitions at the Arts and Science Center of Southeast Arkansas in Pine Bluff and the Delta Cultural Center of Helena-West Helena.

She was appointed to the Arkansas Arts Council advisory board in 1990 by Governor Bill Clinton and reappointed by Governors Jim Guy Tucker, Mike Huckabee and Mike Beebe. She served on the council until 2013, including a tenure as chairperson of the board. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Mid-America Arts Alliance and the Arkansas Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. In 2014, Hearne spearheaded the creation of the statewide arts advocacy organization, Arkansans for the Arts. She is a member of the talent committee for the Six Bridges Book Festival, a board member of the Dunbar Historic Neighborhood Association and has been a key organizer in the Central Arkansas Community Kwanzaa celebration for over 30 years. Hearne is a certified member of the Appraisers Association of America with a specialization in African American fine art.

CHUKES on A BREATH OF FRESH AIR: This body of work reflects time during the pandemic I spent in involuntary creative isolation. The world was on shutdown as the precious air we breathed was no longer safe. Isolation from our loved-ones was further hidden by the sterile masks that filtered ourair and left us faceless. I found a place of refuge in creative purity that allowed me to take off my mask. As a professional artist, this was the first time in my life I was able to retreat to my studio without any distractions of the world tugging at my feet. I bought 1,000 pounds of clay to keep me company. I poured my thoughts into every new creation as I reached deeper into my soul and uncovered new visions that were waiting for the right time to be released. - Read the full statement and see the show online at www.hearnefineart.com

Tonight (9/22) join us for a celebration of NEW FORMS and featured artist Perrion Hurd!

This show is an exploration of Black male identity and spirituality through the powerful medium of portraiture, infused with the visionary lens of Afro-Futurism. In my art, I aim to transcend boundaries and reimagine the narrative surrounding Blackness. Each portrait serves as a mirror, inviting viewers to delve into the intricacies of the Black male experience and confront societal expectations. By merging the visual language of portraiture and Afro-Futurism, I strive to create a space where stories and histories intersect, revealing the resilience, beauty, and spirituality inherent in Black masculinity.

Using the Afro-Futurist framework, I envision a future where Black male identity flourishes beyond stereotypes and systemic oppression. By incorporating elements of science fiction, technology, and mysticism, I transport viewers to a world where the Black experience is infinite, transcendent, and full of possibility. - Perrion Hurd
