Gallery on the Green

Gallery on the Green Juried Arts and Crafts Show The Junior Women’s Club of Litchfield Hills is hosting its 41st annual Gallery on the Green Arts & Crafts Show.

Over 70 juried artisans and crafters will showcase and sell their artwork, including: Fine Art, Photography, Jewelry, Woodworking, Pottery, Folk Art, Furniture, Clothing, Glasswork, Quilting, Leather Goods…and more! For the 41st year, Gallery on the Green will be held on “race weekend” in historic Litchfield, CT. The combination of the Gallery on the Green and the world famous Litchfield Hills Roa

d Race–which attracts many of the best runners in the world–has made the second weekend of June truly an event weekend! This weekend is just one of the many reasons that Litchfield is the second-most visited town in the State of Connecticut. Please come out to support the wonderful artists that make this event such a success. Remember that all proceeds from Gallery on the Green go to local charities and families in need. Come back and look for the listing of our new events to be added to this year’s show!

There is no one marking the green this afternoon for this historic arts and crafts show....this is why...

In November of 2018 the Junior Women’s Club voted to find another local charitable organization that would be willing to take over as host of this event. It was not an easy decision, but one our group felt would let Gallery grow and help even more members of our community. The Litchfield Education Foundation (LEF) was the group willing to take over this event. With their enthusiasm and fresh views, the Junior Women’s Club was happy to hand over this historic event and agreed to help with the transition.

Unfortunately, even after following all of the requests of the Borough of Litchfield, the Litchfield Education Foundation has had to withdraw their application to hold the Arts and Crafts show this year. In a special meeting on January 22nd, The Board of Warden and Burgesses changed the certificate of insurance policy, as follows….”…the Borough Board require certificates of insurance naming the Borough of Litchfield as additional insured, from each individual vendor and for all events on the Green…”.

This new policy rendered it impossible to host an Arts and Crafts show on the green, where all artists will be considered “vendors” by this new policy. It is not feasible to gather these certificates of insurance for every artist in attendance, nor would the artists be willing or able to pay for those binders. After contacting a career artist and long-time Gallery participant, we were told this is almost unheard of among other art shows.

The Junior Women’s Club is truly devastated that this wonderful community event has come to an end. Much time was spent looking for a new host and many hours of planning and transitioning where spent by both organizations, with no warning or discussion allowed on this new policy from the Borough Board. The end of Gallery on the Green is a very sad day for our club and the community as a whole.

We are disappointed to announce that due to a recent change in insurance requirements and food/beverage restrictions imposed in January, the Litchfield Green is no longer a viable location for Gallery on the Green and therefore, we are unable to hold the 2019 event.

We hope Litchfield will be able to host a similar event in the future and welcome your participation at that time.

The Junior Women’s Club of Litchfield Hills (JWCLH) is pleased to announce that the Litchfield Education Foundation will be taking over as host of The Gallery on the Green Arts and Crafts show. After 45 years of hosting this wonderful event, the JWCLH has determined it was best to find a new organization who can improve and grow Gallery. The JWCLH will now be focusing on the 5K all women’s road race, Girls Just Wanna Run, that the club created 10 years ago and developing new fundraising events to support our community.
The Litchfield Education Foundation will be working with the JWCLH to have a seamless transition in running the Gallery on the Green. The artist application for the June 8th show should be available by the end of January 2019. Updates will be posted at jwclitchfieldhills.org and lefforstudents.org.
