Do you like to take pictures? We are looking for volunteers to take pictures of the homes and businesses on their street/road, etc. Not just the Borough, we are also wanting photos from area townships!

Just go out and take pictures, you don't need to print them out. You can email them to us, or put them on a flash drive, or (if I have enough notice), you can stop down and I will bring in my personal photo printer and we can print directly from your mobile device!

Want to have street names and house numbers. If you decide to do this, please don't trespass. A photo from the street or sidewalk is much preferred!

Found some photo album pages from Charles Hayes, before he was a professional photographer. These photos are of area homes and streets - taken between 1899 and 1902.

I will put any information written about each photo in that photo's description. See a home you recognize - let us know!

Here is a photo of a parade float, taken around the 1930s. The store featured was D.M. Akens & Company that sold clothing here in Linesville. David Morrison Akens purchased his business in the "opera house block" - the Opera House was the second floor of the current Linesville Pharmacy - from Miller & Stratton in 1908. He ran the business until 1947. He died June 3, 1951 and is buried here in Linesville Cemetery.

There are six ladies and one gentleman on the float. The man and four ladies have been named, but nothing tells me which lady is which!

Posting in hopes that someone has these ladies in their family tree and can identify her for us!

Named are the following:
driver - Harold Akens (David's son)
passengers - Jean Dennis Herbold, Mary Frances Garwood Ewing, Audrey Turner and Perilla Frey Whitesmith.

Facebook Update Annoying Glitch

Getting a “how may I help you” or “send message” pop-up when enlarging one of our posted photos? That is due to a Facebook update and we can not control it. Borrowed the following wording from another user that hopefully better explains this:

‘Facebook has added a feature whenever you click on my photos it sends a direct message to me, the fun part is I cannot turn this off. If you do not type anything, I never receive anything so please don’t feel obligated to actually send a message. I’ve been getting dozens upon dozens of messages a day, mostly with “sorry just looking at your photos” but I’ve also received some rude messages as if people assume I’m messaging them.
I promise it’s not me and I cannot turn it off 😅😅 hoping fb changes this but in th mean time I just wanted to put a little message out there! “

Have added some photos from our Native American collection for you to see, and try this post as a test as supposedly there is something we can do when making an original post to stop it on the post. Some people have tried it and it works - some say it doesn’t work. Fingers crossed! In the meantime, if you get a message pop-up, just ignore it!

Here is a photo of downtown Linesville. Can date this photo to between 1902 and 1907. 1902 is when the Borough hall was built and it is in this photo - and D.G. Lacey, Merchant Tailor, left Linesville in early 1907.

Daniel Gold Lacey ran his merchant tailoring business here from approximately 1897 until 1907. The business must have been a booming one as in the 1900 census his home is full of tailors and tailoresses - from his wife, to his brother and brother-in-law.

When Mr. Lacey ran his store here in Linesville, his wife was Lulu Jack. She died in 1916. Have included a picture here of D.G. Lacey and his second wife, Edith Jane Harris.

The perspective on this photo makes the town look "short" and all the buildings smushed together. D. G. Lacey's store was approximately to the left of the current Brad Roae office from old maps.

Here is a gorgeous home and garage/barn, that I am hoping someone can identify. There are words written on the back in pencil; however, I can not decipher all the words. Will attach a scan of the back.

Attached is the original image which is almost fading away to nothing, and an AI enhanced version to help identify the home.

**NOTE: This paragraph added after the initial post: Stop the Presses! Gosh, haven't had to say that in a long time! Found an article in the the August 12, 1880 issue of the Conneautville Courier noting that the school building was moved "across the street" to be used as the town hall. Have attached that article at the back. The 1876 map of Linesville shows the school across the street about where the fire hall would be today. Was it once where it ended up, and then moved back?**

Linesville's very first school, taught by Amos Line, was in a log cabin on the South side of East Erie Street (near the area where the Legion parking lot is now).

The next school was built in 1841 on what is now Triangle Park (switched to Veteran's Memorial Park by someone for some unknown reason). It was used until 1880 when the new brick building was ready in the area of what is now the Fire Department and The Next Right Thing.

A photo (shown here) of this "old school" was donated to the society some time ago by the estate of Nellie Gilliland.

The building still existed and is shown only as the "old school" in the 1881 Sanborn Fire Map (shown here) and the 1882 Sanborn Fire Map. By 1892 it is now used as the "town lock up"!

Have not finished the research on this building yet, as to when it was moved or removed, etc., but thought you might like to see it.

Saturday we posted an image of the Mobilgas Station where The Port At Pymatuning now resides. Today we feature this photo taken BEFORE it was even a gas station.

The two-story building is a residence in this photo. Can date the photo to be between 1907 (when the streets were bricked) to before 1911 (as there is a building on the left side of the street that burned down in 1911).

What is now the United Presbyterian Church office, was a bakery at the time. Have been unable to determine the name of that particular bakery, but we shall discover it!

Here is the original image, then an AI enhanced version - ignore the wording in the Ai version, but it does show the building details much clearer and cleaner. Then I have also attached the 1911 Sanborn Fire Insurance Company map of that corner (Erie and South Mercer) showing the bakery and the dwelling house that eventually became the Port At Pymatuning.

Here's an image of trees. Absolutely no idea where in the area this photo of trees surrounded by a wire fence may have been taken.

Just sharing the image because it is a stunning, vintage colorized photo. Original colorized image, NOT Ai enhanced. Wish I knew the photographer, location or date, but we can just enjoy the beauty of the image.
