Main Street, North Woodstock—1951
The hunt was over. The game was secured. And, before heading home, three out-of-state hunters paused on Main Street in North Woodstock for a family photograph that, seventy-five years later, gives us something more than a record of a successful hunting trip.
Look past the game and the hunters, and downtown North Woodstock begins to emerge.
The Colonial Cafe sits on Main Street, its doors open beneath the awning. Next door, signs advertise rooms at the Shamrock Inn and souvenirs, gifts, and ice cream at the North Woodstock Souvenir Store & Ice Cream Spa. Cars from another era line the street, while the buildings and businesses themselves—some still familiar, others long gone—give us a glimpse of North Woodstock as it looked in 1951.
The scene is perfectly ordinary. No one appears to be posing for history. They are simply stopping for a photograph after a day in the woods.
This photograph is part of the Upper Pemigewasset Historical Society's Collection.
