The new school year is approaching, which means the highly anticipated (or dreaded) student photo days are also on the way.

Pictured is Ms. Vera Cole’s class with principle, Mr. Bond, of Otis Grade School in 1935. Otis grade school served 1st through 5th grade students living along the Salmon River. As depicted in this picture, young learners of many backgrounds including Native American, European, and Japanese ancestry attended the school together. The school building still stands and is currently Otis’ Fire Hall located north of Otis Junction along the Old Scenic Highway 101.

As we remember the legacy of Dolly Parton we celebrate the power of books to expand our knowledge, fuel our imaginations, and inspire us to dream big dreams. Although it is unknown if the country music icon traveled to North Lincoln County, we know she performed not too far away and dedicated a song to the city of Eugene, Oregon. Akin to Dolly’s love of reading and her foundation to promote literacy, the museum has a free children’s book library that was dedicated to former President of NLCHM’s Board of Directors, Jean Majoska, who shared a passion for children’s education. 🩷🦋

In what universe can you watch the latest Spider-Man movie AND support your local historical museum? It’s this one!

The BIJOU THEATRE LINCOLN CITY is donating a portion of movie ticket sales to support the museum’s efforts to preserve local history. Donations will go towards the digitization of TV 10 VHS cassettes that are at risk of deterioration. TV 10 was Lincoln City’s very own news broadcast station that captured the city’s unique surroundings and stories.

Help preserve Lincoln City’s history before it’s lost!

During the month of August the Bijou Theatre will be donating a portion of movie ticket sales to the North Lincoln County Historical Museum. Funds will support the museum’s TV 10 Digitization Project, an initiative to clean, stabilize, and preserve the tapes of TV 10 - Lincoln City’s very own TV station that was active in the 1980s to 1990s.

VHS tapes are prone to deterioration and overtime lose their quality until they are completely unviewable. Once digitized, TV 10 footage will be available for public viewing long-term!

When you are visiting the Bijou Theatre, you’re also enjoying a piece of local history! The Bijou is the longest operating theater in Lincoln City opening its doors as the Lakeside Theater in 1937. Current owners, Keith and Betsy Altomare have owned and operated the Bijou since 1996.

The museum is going through a serious summer glow up ✨
Not only is the museum getting a new roof this week, work is being done to update the building's drainage system to ensure that artifacts and belongings are safe from water intrusion. It’s all about outer and inner work. Due to continued construction, the museum will be CLOSED Wednesday, July 29 and reopen Thursday, July 30.

We are getting a new roof! The museum will be CLOSED during roofing construction from Wednesday, July 22 to Saturday, July 25.

Happy National Ice Cream Day🍦Let’s get the scoop on Lincoln City’s iconic ice cream establishment, Eleanor’s Undertow!

Eleanor’s has been serving sweet treats and happy memories in the historic district of Taft since 1980. Eleanor opened up her restaurant, nicknamed “The Tow”, along the Siletz Bay waterfront after managing Mo’s Restaurant for 3 years. Partnering with her mother, Raychel Sax, and using family recipes for cookies, cobbler, and savory bites, Eleanor’s Undertow quickly became a popular eatery and hangout spot for countless visitors and locals. The cotton candy pink building decorated with mermaids and colorful food paintings welcomed hungry guests for many years until The Tow relocated in 2025. Today, Eleanor’s Undertow is open down the street from its original location at another historical site, the Siletz Bay Trading Post, on the corner of 51st Street and Highway 101. Eleanor’s daughter Vickie and her husband Tom continue to serve ice cream and a variety of desserts, adding sweetness to our days on the Oregon Coast.

If you are a Lincoln City resident, you might be living in it! The Cascade Head Biosphere Region spans 102,000 acres and encompasses marine, intertidal, prairie, forest, and human-designed habitats. Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1976, the Cascade Head Biosphere Region is a space with rich biological diversity providing opportunities for scientific research and harmonious human and nature connection.

It is the peak of produce in Oregon 🫐

Many markets and grocery stores are featuring the abundance of Oregon-grown veggies and fruit. Grocery stores are not only places to purchase food and household goods, they are often community hubs where locals can catch up on the latest news and gossip. This was the case in the small towns that made up Lincoln City in the early 20th century. Alongside the post office, a general merchandise store was one of the first buildings to be constructed in a town. Oftentimes, the post office and general store were in the same building. The museum’s photo collection contains many of Lincoln City’s early general stores which served as meeting places for community connection.
