As a child my mom always referred to this day as Decoration Day. We also visited cemeteries that day too. A deep rooted tradition carried on today.

DID YOU KNOW?

Before it was called Memorial Day, it was known as Decoration Day!

Following the Civil War, communities across the country gathered to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and wreaths. It was an act of mourning, gratitude, and national healing.

The Grand Army of the Republic helped establish and preserve this sacred tradition, and the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic continue that mission today.

We remember because they deserve to be remembered!

I have a cool piece of history to share with you today. The first photo is a 1914 letter from Mart Armstrong GAR Post 202. It’s in regard to the cannon, General Grant. Read the transcript in caption.
The second photo is a letter from Tent 23 written in 1930 in appreciation of receiving General Grant. Transcript in caption.
The last photo is the infamous cannon, General Grant still in Tent 23 possession all these years later.
