The red poppy became a symbol of Memorial Day because of the fields of poppies that grew across the battlefields of Europe after World War I, especially in the region of Flanders in Belgium. The image was made famous by the poem “In Flanders Fields” written in 1915 by Canadian physician and soldier John McCrae after he witnessed the devastation of war and the poppies blooming among the graves of fallen soldiers. In the United States, wearing a red poppy on Memorial Day became popular after teacher and humanitarian Moina Michael campaigned to make the flower a national symbol of remembrance. Veterans organizations later adopted the tradition, and artificial poppies were often made and distributed to raise funds for veterans and military families.
Today, the poppy serves as a quiet reminder of the cost of war and the memory of those who gave their lives in service.

May 24th is the birthday of Pontormo, an influential Italian painter of the Mannerist period during the late Renaissance. Born Jacopo Carucci, he was a student of Andrea del Sarto and quickly became known for his emotionally expressive figures, unusual compositions, and vibrant, often unnatural colors that broke away from the balanced harmony of the High Renaissance. His works frequently conveyed tension and movement, helping define the dramatic style of Mannerism. Among his most celebrated paintings is The Deposition in Florence’s Santa Felicita Church, admired for its swirling figures and haunting atmosphere. Pontormo’s innovative approach greatly influenced later Renaissance and Baroque artists.

May 23rd is the birthday of Franz Kline, an American painter best known for his bold black-and-white abstract compositions and his important role in the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1940s and 1950s. Inspired by urban structures, bridges, and industrial forms, Kline created energetic paintings with sweeping brushstrokes that conveyed movement, power, and emotion. Although many of his works appear spontaneous, they were often carefully planned. Later in his career, he also incorporated strong color into his paintings, further expanding his expressive style and influence on modern art.

May 22nd is the birthday of Marisol Escobar, known simply as Marisol, a Venezuelan-American sculptor associated with the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. Born in Paris in 1930, she studied art in Los Angeles, Paris, and New York before becoming internationally recognized for her striking wooden sculptures that combined painting, assemblage, humor, and social commentary. Her life-sized figures often explored themes of identity, fame, politics, and femininity, blending influences from folk art, pre-Columbian sculpture, and contemporary culture. Though closely connected with artists like Andy Warhol, Marisol developed a highly original artistic voice that stood apart from traditional Pop Art. Today, she is celebrated as one of the most innovative sculptors of the postwar era.

May 22nd is the birthday of Mary Cassatt, an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, but lived much of her adult life in France, where she first befriended Edgar Degas and later exhibited among the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children. Cassatt and her contemporaries enjoyed the wave of feminism that occurred in the 1840s, allowing them access to educational institutions at newly coed colleges and universities, such as Oberlin and the University of Michigan. Cassatt was an outspoken advocate for women's equality, campaigning with her friends for equal travel scholarships for students in the 1860s, and the right to vote in the 1910s.
