Check out this great post from Fort Dobbs State Historic Site!

"They had one large camp six miles from Bethania, and a smaller one less than three miles." (Records of the Moravians in North Carolina. Vol I p228)

The manners in which the English and Colonists conducted war were very different from the way the Cherokee did. Anglo soldiers (Regulars, Provincials, and Militia) went heavily loaded, and moved relatively slowly. Cherokee warriors, on the other hand, carried very little. In fact, they carried so little, that James Adair remarked their "...regiment would be too mortifying to any of the white people..."

Cherokee warriors camped in a very particular manner when at war. The war leader selected a spot well off of trails, in an easily defensible place where the chance of surprise was minimal. The warriors camped in a circle with their guns and equipment propped on forked sticks driven into the ground, which they would lay next to.

Their meager equipment consisted of their weapons (typically a Carolina Gun, war club, and knife), an otter hide shot pouch, powderhorn, fire making kit, tobacco, pipe, paint, a mirror, extra moccasins, a matchcoat and/or blanket, and food. Their rations typically amounted to a small amount of parched corn and jerked venison.

The majority of their gear was carried wrapped in their blanket and secured with a woven or buffalo hide tumpline. A tumpline was a wide band with two very long straps on each end that was used to tie up and sling their packs on their backs.

Equipped in such a light manner, Cherokee warriors were able to travel hundreds of miles quite quickly in order to launch surprise attacks and ambushes. They left very little trace of their presence.
