Mary Todd Lincoln House The Mary Todd Lincoln House is the childhood home of Mrs. Abraham Lincoln and the first historic site restored to tell the story of a first lady. Open Mon.-Sat.
(228)

The Mary Todd Lincoln House is the girlhood home of the first lady and wife of the 16th president Abraham Lincoln. The Lincolns visited her family here after their marriage. Today, the museum cultivates public interest in the multilayered past by sharing the story of a woman whose experiences resonate today. Opened in 1977, the museum is the first historic site restored to tell the story of a first lady. Sophisticated and well educated, Mary Todd Lincoln’s success in the White House seemed assured. Yet few women have endured as much controversy and tragedy. Visit her family home to learn more about this fascinating woman! Self-guided tours. Open seasonally March 15th -Nov 30th. Holiday schedule varies. (closed Sun.) $15 adults; $6 youth ages 6–17. Located in downtown Lexington, KY.

We’re excited to have a quilt on loan to the Headley Whitney Museum for their “Storied Quilts” Exhibition!

Our Whig Rose pattern quilt was made by Mrs. Mary Hayden of Georgetown, KY in 1835 as a wedding gift for Ann Smith Hamilton upon her marriage to Robert Bell Hamilton. The three large panels are sewn together and feature appliqué and heavy hand quilting.

Check out our quilt in the 70-quilt exhibition this Fall! The “Storied Quilts” Exhibit is on View from September 18-December 6 during the Headley Whitney Museum’s hours of Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am -4:00 pm. Thank you for the Headley Whitney for this important curation of textiles!

Did you know an 11-year-old girl inspired Abraham Lincoln to grow a beard? Grace Bedell wrote to him in 1860, suggesting whiskers to boost his appearance & votes. He was hesitant, but started growing a beard after being elected president! 📚 We sell a children's book in our museum store that tells the tale.

Who doesn’t love a field trip? 🚗💨 Mary Todd Lincoln House staff spent an afternoon visiting our friend, Durbin Tinsley at the Jack Jouett House in Versailles. Serving as Interim Director, Durbin gave an excellent, informative tour about Jack Jouett’s role as the “Paul Revere of the South”, as well as life on the Kentucky frontier.
