Axial flow engines operate under the motto: compress, burn, blow. The blades closest to the intake get progressively smaller, compressing the air. Once the air reaches the combustion chamber, it combines with fuel and is ignited. The energy leaves the exhaust, producing the thrust needed to propel the aircraft.

The J-34 produced 3000 pounds of thrust. Two of these engines were required to produce enough thrust to sustain early experimental jet aircraft! The J-34 is one of several early engine models that propelled the jet age forward. Located in the museum's Engine Gallery, the J-34 and its successors are on display for an up-close look!

✨Want to experiment with operating an engine?✨ Check out the new Engine Lab interactive exhibit, located by the Engine Gallery in the Flight Technology Hall!
