George B. Hitchcock House The Reverend George B. Hitchcock House was a stop on the Underground Railroad prior to the Civil War and has been designated a National Historic Landmark.

The House sits just outside Lewis, IA. More information can be found at www.hitchcockhouse.org Hitchcock House is open for tours from May 1 - September 15. (Closed on Mother’s Day, Father's Day & Federal Holidays) Tours begin at 1:00 p.m. and the last tour each day begins at 4:15. We are only open on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, & Sundays. Closed Mondays, Tuesdays, & Wednesdays. The gift shop is open from 1pm to end of last tour each day that tours run Thursdays through Sundays. At this time our gift shop does not accept credit cards. Cash, check or Venmo only. Admissions costs: $5 for Adults and High School students. Younger children are free. If you have a tour group larger than 10, or want to schedule a tour on another day, please call us at 712-769-2323. Please leave a detailed message if you get the answering machine. Please remember, we are a volunteer-ran organization, so tours outside of our normal operating season may not be able to be scheduled. Thank you! Cass County came through!
With 25 non-profits hosting Day of Service events, the goal was 1,250 individuals volunteering their time with those non-profits. Our number across the county was 2,014 volunteers!

Thank you! The work doesn't stop now that the goal has been met. Every non-profit needs volunteers in multiple areas. Please continue volunteering in those organizations that need the help! Next season, consider joining us as a volunteer tour guide!

September is International Underground Railroad Month, a time to commemorate the importance of the Underground Railroad and the places that preserve the stories of freedom seekers.

The National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, managed by the National Park Service, recognizes sites, research facilities and educational programs connected to people who escaped enslavement and those who helped them pursue freedom. Today, the Network to Freedom includes more than 900 members, including sites that are also part of the Reconstruction Era National Historic Network.

Together, these sites tell stories that connect the struggle for freedom to the history of Reconstruction. Some include Fort Monroe National Monument in Virginia, Boston African American National Historic Site in Massachusetts, Tabernacle Baptist Church in Beaufort, South Carolina, and Mother Bethel AME Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvannia.
