It is with much gratitude for his passion of preserving history, that we dedicate a video of a few stories told by Jimmy King. Jimmy passed away on Monday at the age of 92.
The Leighton Museum, founded by the King family, began in 1954 and was relocated to Bank Independent in Leighton in 2016. This state of the art museum includes a case dedicated to Jimmy with relics dating back to the 1700’s. There is also a classic video featuring Jimmy and others telling the stories of Leighton.
We are thankful that his stories will live on for generations to come!

Leighton legends Jimmy Hughes and Percy Sledge were two of the first musicians mentioned in the grand opening of this amazing exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame in downtown Nashville. These men, along with Leighton’s Bob Carl Bailey and many more, are featured in the exhibit with many items on loan from the Leighton Museum. Thank you to the curators of the museum for recreating this timeless area of music from the Shoals. And a special thanks to Linda Hall, a graduate of CCHS in Leighton, for her continued passion for telling the story of Muscle Shoals music.

🌿 Did you know? Archaeologists have dated charcoal from the LaGrange Rock Shelter, near Leighton, to around 11,280 BC — indicating people were living here more than 13,000 years ago.

On Native American Day, we honor the deep roots, culture, and contributions of Indigenous peoples in this land — the Chickasaw, Cherokee, and earlier peoples whose stories are our stories too. Through their wisdom and presence, this place became more than just land — it became community.

We invite you to come explore Leighton Museum to dive into our shared heritage. Our exhibits include Native American pieces, artifacts from early settlers, pictures, and stories that bring to life the many layers of Leighton’s history.

📍 Visit us at 8720 Main Street. Walk through the past, learn about the people who shaped this land, and celebrate the heritage that continues to live in our community.
