Ahkeecha - To Plant 🌱

With our Planting Moon fast approaching its time for you all to get out and get some soil, seeds, trowels and some SUN 🌞.

One of the most important times of the year - if you missed your planting window - no crops come harvest moon, or a decreased yield!

Coming from the root word Ahkee - meaning Land!

Ahkeecha - is spelled various ways in historical documents

Ohkehteau/Ohketeau - “He/She Plants”

Aukeeteaûmen - “To plant corn”

Aukeeteaûmitch - “Planting Time”

Ohkehteaen-in - “a planter, one who plants”

In the Pequot language, ice is kupat. As winter settles in, it’s a fitting time to reflect on the language that continues to connect us to the land and seasons.
To learn more Pequot language terms, follow the MPTN Language Department’s account, Uyôtuwash and join us in supporting the revitalization of our language.
