Tonight, we close one chapter that has shaped more than 15 years of my life.

After years of welcoming you into our physical galleries, sharing stories, talking about wild places, and watching photographs find their homes, we’re saying farewell to our Leavenworth gallery. I’m feeling a lot tonight. Mostly, gratitude.

This isn’t the end of Peter James Photography. It’s the beginning of something I’ve dreamed about for a long time.

We’re moving the gallery fully online and giving ourselves the freedom to spend more of our lives out in the natural world, exploring, photographing, and sharing the beauty and wonder that inspired all of this in the first place.

First, we’ll spend the next couple of months traveling through national parks in North America. Then we’re off to Southeast Asia, including Bali, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

To every collector who brought one of my photographs into your life, every person who walked through our doors, and everyone who shared a conversation with us along the way, thank you. You made these galleries something far more meaningful than a place to hang photographs.

And to my wife iMa, none of this would have been possible without you. Thank you for believing in this life we’ve built together and for being beside me as we step into whatever comes next. I love you.

One of the fun parts of being in the gallery is meeting other photographers. Photography is such a personal medium. Some people use it to celebrate wildlife and nature, and some like to shoot cars, family, or even things on fire. However we approach it, our cameras become a way of sharing our vision.

I always enjoy talking shop, swapping stories from the trail, looking through each other’s images, and learning new ways of seeing the world. Even after 36 years behind the camera, there’s always something to learn from another photographer.

I’ll miss those conversations happening in the galleries, but I’m even more excited about the ones waiting out on the trail as I begin traveling full time this fall. There’s something special about meeting another photographer beside a river, on a mountain pass, at a beach, or watching the same sunset together.

Art is inspiration for and a celebration of life. For my daughter Zaya’s high school graduation gift, we took her and her two best friends to Seattle to see The Phantom of the Opera at the Paramount Theatre last night.

I’ve wanted to take her to this show since she was about five years old. Somehow, it came through Seattle just two weeks before graduation, right at the edge of one life chapter and the beginning of another.

Sitting there, I remembered being 11 years old and hearing that soundtrack for the first time. I must have listened to it a hundred times. It opened something in me. It showed me how powerful art could be, how music and story could reach places ordinary words couldn’t.

Even though I chose the path of a visual artist and not a performing artist, I still do my best to have this level of emotional impact with my work.

“And through music my soul began to soar.”

That line stayed with me because it names what great art can do. It lifts something in us. It helps us feel more alive. It reminds us that beauty can become a compass.

Watching my brilliant, beautiful daughter experience that with her friends, right before graduation, felt like one of those rare full-circle moments.

We’re both stepping into new chapters now. She’s moving toward her future, and iMa and I are preparing for a life of full-time travel, exploration, and creating art in the natural world.

Different stages. Same invitation.

To keep becoming.

Na Pali is not a place that feels easily described.

The cliffs rise from the Pacific with a kind of ancient presence, carved by time, rain, wind, and sea into forms that feel almost impossible. Near Kalalau Valley, the vertical spires known as the Cathedral seemed to hold the light rather than simply reflect it.

These three photographs came from a brief opening in the clouds after a rough crossing along Kauai’s western coast. For a few moments, sunlight moved across the cliffs and revealed the depth, texture, and scale of this extraordinary place.

What struck me most was not only the drama of the landscape, but the feeling of reverence it created. Na Pali has a way of making you feel small in the best possible way. Humbled. Awake. Grateful to witness something far older and greater than yourself.

This is a love story, not an action thriller.

From the outside, it might look like iMa and I are chasing something wild and foreign. Transitioning from physical galleries to online and social only. Leaving the home we’ve known for 21 years. Stepping into a life of full time travel and uncertainty.

But the truth is deeper than that. That which is most essential, we are taking with us.

This only works because we are true partners in every sense of the word, and this is simply the next chapter in the story of us.

iMa has always believed in the path before it’s visible. She’s building a life and a movement rooted in restoration and care for the earth, and I’ve had the privilege of supporting that. In the same way, she’s stood behind every step of my journey as an artist, even the uncertain ones.

This next chapter isn’t about going further. It’s about coming closer.

Closer to each other, closer to ourselves, and closer to our lives purposes.

Taking this leap together takes a kind of trust that grows over years. The kind that lets you step into something new together without needing to have it all figured out.

When you look at your own life, who is that person that makes things feel possible for you?

I’m grateful we get to find out what’s ahead, together.
