** Famous Friday!! **

There are several well accomplished or famous people from Laurens County and we want to feature them!

Did you know that famous Bowler Jean Hammond Whitfield was from Laurens?

A graduate of Hickory Tavern High School, she became one of the county's most accomplished athletes. She earned national and international recognition in the sport of bowling, serving on the U.S. Team in 1982 and 1983. In 1983, she won four international titles, including Overall Champion and Doubles Champion at the Pan American Games in Caracas, Venezuela. Whitfield was also the top amateur bowler at the WIBC Championship in 1982 and was inducted into the South Carolina Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1984.

Today is Indigenous People's Day!

On this day we celebrate the history, culture, and strength of the first peoples of this land; especially those who shaped what we now know as South Carolina. Among these MANY groups are the Catawba, P*e Dee, Edisto Natchez-Kusso, Yamassee, Waccamaw, Cheraw, and Cherokee peoples.

South Carolina has 1 federally recognized tribe and 9 state recognized tribe.

We honor their traditions, resilience, and on-going contributions to our state and communities. We are especially grateful for the PAIA Lower Eastern Cherokee Nation SC in Gray Court, and their role and influence here in Laurens County. We welcome new Chief James McDowell and new Vice Chief Shelley Edmonds Shafer as they look to the future of the tribe. We look forward to continued partnership.

Join us November 28-January 16 for the Smithsonian Exhibit "Americans" based on the National Museum of the American Indian. This exhibit dispels myths around Thanksgiving, Pocohontas, The Battle of Little Big Horn and The Trail of Tears. It also shares the influence of Indiginous People on American culture and addresses misrepresentations and stereotypes.

Join Durant Ashmore for a detailed look at the workings of these weapons, with a tour of the Laurens County Museum's Revolutionary War Exhibit that features one of South Carolina’s most complete selection of 18th century weaponry.
