Poky Co, IA Historical Society This page is dedicated to preserving the history of Pocahontas County, Iowa Pocahontas County was formed in 1851.

It was named for the fabled Indian princess Pocahontas, daughter of the Chief Powhatan and wife of Englishman John Rolfe. The county presently contains the incorporated cities of Pocahontas, Laurens, Rolfe, Fonda, Gilmore City, Palmer, Havelock, Plover, and Varina. The Pocahontas County Historical Society Museum is located in Laurens in the northwest corner of the county.

We spent some time at PAC Elementary School with Mrs. Johnson's fourth grade classes. They will be learning about transportation, so we gave them a local angle with the history of railroads in the county. We have to thank the Albert City Museum for letting us use some of their great railroad artifacts.

It's always a good day when students visit the museum. PAC fourth graders, with their teachers Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Evans, came to Laurens on Monday. In addition to a scavenger hunt at the museum, they had stories and games at the library and a tour at Community State Bank.

We went to see the fourth graders at PAC and Laurens Marathon this week. We shared the story of the Mill Creek people who lived near Peterson about 800 years ago. Thanks to Mrs. Johnson and Ms. Powers for letting us share our love for local history. Thanks to Pocahontas County Conservation for letting us borrow some of their local artifacts to bring this story to life.
