The Lincoln Highway was declared formally open by its backers on October 31, 1913, 108 years ago today, with a coordinated series of ceremonies along the route. Bonfires and fireworks marked the celebrations in hundreds of cities in the 13 states along the line. Concerts and parades took place. In at least two locations, the streets were swept and washed so dances could be held on the highway! Publicity pushes like this by the early Lincoln Highway Association really helped establish the roadway in the public's mind, even after the government started designating roads by numbers in 1926. #LincolnHighway

This #TBT, we travel back to one of the oldest sites along the Highway, The Compass Inn Museum (@compassinnmuseum). Originally an old stagecoach stop, the Inn has been restored to show what life was like for 19th century travelers. The log half of the building was built in 1799. The stone addition was added in 1820 to accommodate increased traffic from the newly completed Pittsburgh - Philadelphia Turnpike. What stories we would hear, if the walls could talk! In conjunction with spooky season, the museum also features a Halloween Hauntings Storytelling walk from 6 to 9pm, Friday thru Sunday this Halloween weekend.

#DYK that several common terms we use today can be traced back to automobiles? For example, "It's a doozy" meaning something's terrific or outstanding, is from the 1930's Duesenberg. Or "It's the Cadillac (or Lexus or Mercedes)", meaning the best, is from those luxury car brands. And whatever you do, you don't want your efforts to become "an Edsel", a reference to failure derived from Ford's unsuccessful brand of the 50's and 60's. Let us know of any other car-related idioms in the the comments below! #MuseumMonday

An essential component of roadside entertainment in earlier years was the drive-in movie theater. First patented in New Jersey in 1933, at one time there were over 4,000 drive-ins across the country. Pennsylvania is particularly rich in drive-ins, having more still in operation than any other state aside from New York. The Lincoln Highway once boasted of numerous drive-ins, including the one pictured here, the Hi Way in Latrobe, which closed in 2011. Many thanks to historian Brian Butko for his assistance with the photo. #TBT #DriveIn

Our hearts go out to the family of John Beamer, who recently passed away. We best remember this history lover for his work in helping our organization save the Koontz Coffee Pot in Bedford when it was in danger of being demolished. He was integral to the restoration and relocation of this #LincolnHighway landmark to the Bedford County Fairgrounds, where it can be enjoyed for generations to come. John, you will be greatly missed by us all.

The Atland House (Altland House Grill & Pub) established in 1880, is located on one of the oldest tavern sites in Adams county. A licensed tavern has stood at the corner of the square in Abbottstown since 1750. The Inn, like the town, has undergone many changes since colonial times. The building was given its present facade in 1911. Carefully restored, the Atland House continues to serve Lincoln Highway travelers fine food and lodging. Many thanks to historian Brian Butko for his assistance with the 1936 photo of Atland House! #TBT #AtlandHouse

For more than four decades, Bedford artist Kevin Kutz has painted extensively along the Lincoln Highway. Our museum is fortunate enough to house several works from his collection, including the painting below of the popular Koontz coffee pot restoration. Kevin’s impressions of the beloved road have aided many in their examinations of life along the corridor. Browse some of his pieces here at the Experience or look for a local exhibition soon! #MuseumMonday #KevinKutz

We're starting to sees signs of change!

Northern counties in Pennsylvania continue to progress rapidly to peak foliage after last week’s cold nights.

However, expect the above-average temperatures and humidity this week to slow the transition of leaves in much of the commonwealth.

Come on, fall foliage! πŸ‚πŸ Learn more in DCNR’s Week 2 Fall Foliage report ➑️ http://bit.ly/2OCvs8C

Let's #TBT to the early days of luxury automobiles and the esteemed Packard. Considered THE car of the Lincoln Highway, Packard was the preeminent luxury car before World War 2 and featured innovations including the modern steering wheel, air-conditioning, and one of the first 12 cylinder engines. Owning a Packard was a mark of prestige and Lincoln Highway co-founder Henry B. Joy, once president of Packard, helped to popularize the car. Pictured here is a 1937 Packard 120 with a price tag of about $1,000 at time of production. See it in person on your museum tour!

October means candy and what better place to find some then Mister Ed's Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium (@MisterEdsPA), right on the Lincoln Highway outside Gettysburg. "Mister Ed" Gotwalt opened his first store in 1975 as a "most unusual" general store and reinvented his business in 1983 as an elephant museum and candy emporium. The museum currently houses the nation's largest collection of elephants with 12,000 figurines from across the globe and some of the best candy and fudge in the area. #MuseumMonday #MisterEds

Just before Bedford, on a summit known as Tull's Hill, stands the Lincoln Motor Court, built in 1944. While it has changed hands a few times over the years, current owners Debbie and Bob Altizer have run the motel since 1983. It is the only surviving tourist cabin court on whole Lincoln Highway open to overnight guests and is currently for sale! #TBT

The Lincoln Highway offers some of the most unique sights in the state of PA. Businesses used what is known as Programmatic Architecture as a way to catch the attention of motorists. They are large roadside structures that look like massive objects. The best known sights are the Shoe House in York, the Coffee Pot in Bedford, the Pied Piper in Schellsburg, and the former Grand View Ship Hotel. #LincolnHighway #ShipHotel

The large rusty metal gas pump is part of the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridors Roadside Giants project. The steel pump weighs nearly 5,000 pounds, 25 feet tall and represents a 1940s Bennett gas pump. It is one of five Roadside Giants on the Pennsylvania Lincoln Highway. It was designed and constructed by the students of the Eastern Westmoreland Career and Technology Center in 2010. It is located at the entrance to the Lincoln Highway Experience at 3435 State Route 30, East Latrobe. #2patravelinggirls #metalgaspump #lincolnhighway #lincolnhighwaypa #lincolnhighwayexperience #lincolnhighwayheritagecorridor #roadsidegiants #roadsidegiantsofthelincolnhighway #steelpump #giants #bennettgaspump #easternwestmorelandcareertechnologycenter #latrobe #pahistory #roadsideattraction #bigstuff #explorepa #explorepennsylvania #visitpa #visitpennsylvania #patravels #roadtrip #roadtrip2021 #roadtrippin #onlyinpennsylvania #roadtrips #neverstopexploring #travelgirls
