Today, the Lincoln Highway Experience is closed in observance of Juneteenth.

Observed annually on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas - more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

As we reflect on this important chapter in our nation's history, we honor the ongoing pursuit of freedom, equality, and justice.

We encourage our community to take time today to learn, reflect, and celebrate the resilience, achievements, and contributions of Black Americans throughout our shared history.

The museum will reopen tomorrow with regular hours.

🚗🛣️

Before road trips inspired bestselling novels, iconic songs, and generations of wanderers chasing the horizon, there was the Lincoln Highway.

Dedicated in 1913 as America's first coast-to-coast highway, the Lincoln Highway transformed travel from a necessity into an adventure. Suddenly, the journey itself became the destination.

This historic photograph captures the excitement of the early automobile era - when crowds gathered to marvel at the latest machines and motorists set out in search of freedom, discovery, and the promise of the open road.

That same spirit would later echo through works like On the Road, the anthem "On the Road Again," and countless stories of Americans finding connection and meaning behind the wheel.

Join us this Saturday for our Great American Road Trip Celebration as we honor the road that helped inspire a uniquely American tradition.

And next week, we're excited to welcome travelers from across the country for the National Lincoln Highway Association Conference as they continue the journey along America's Main Street.

A summer day. A full parking lot. The family car packed for adventure.

This vintage postcard of Shawnee Lake near Schellsburg reminds us of a time when the Lincoln Highway wasn't just a route across Pennsylvania - it was a gateway to summer memories.

Whether travelers were headed coast to coast or simply enjoying a Sunday drive, Shawnee Lake offered a welcome stop for boating, swimming, and relaxation along America's first transcontinental highway.

Some things may have changed over the years, but the joy of discovering new places along the Lincoln Highway remains the same.

Abe Lincoln visited Bedford County once and they named a highway, a hotel, and a motor court after him. Coincidence? We think not. 🎩

Our friends at Discover Bedford are back with another hilarious “Trust the Hat” adventure, sending Honest Abe in search of coffee, roadside curiosities, and answers to life’s biggest questions—like whether a covered bridge is actually a bridge.

Take a few minutes to enjoy this one and see why Bedford County remains one of the Lincoln Highway’s most memorable stops.

What if you could spend the night in a giant shoe?

Just outside York, Pennsylvania, stands one of the most iconic roadside attractions in the country: the Haines Shoe House. Built in 1948 by shoe salesman Mahlon Haines, this whimsical landmark has been turning heads for generations and remains a favorite stop for travelers exploring on a Lincoln Highway adventure.

The Shoe House is a reminder that some of the best road trip memories aren't found on the interstate - they're discovered along the back roads, in small towns, and at the quirky roadside attractions that make a journey unforgettable.

A special thank you to Kyle Brown, one of the owners of the Lincoln Motor Court, for sharing these fantastic photos of this Pennsylvania roadside treasure.

Have you ever visited the Shoe House? Better yet, would you spend the night there?
