It took Mario Basner, Basner Fine Art, two years to get permission to photograph Trinity College Dublin’s Long Room. When the call finally came, he was on a plane within 24 hours. His coat and tripod ended up in South Africa. He shot it in freezing February temperatures with borrowed equipment, knowing he’d be the last person to photograph it before 2,000 of its rarest books were removed.

That is what it takes to document the world’s most extraordinary libraries.

Basner has spent years gaining access to spaces most people will never enter—Admont Abbey, the Abbey Library of Saint Gall, George Peabody in Baltimore.

Only one photographer a year is chosen to shoot Admont. He was that photographer. “I feel a huge responsibility to do justice to the environment and all the people who came before me,” he said. “These old architectural wonders hold a lot of memories. As I take a last look around, I say goodbye to the past.”

We spoke to him about what it really takes. Full story in STNDRDS Issue No.1

The scale. The detail. The stories behind the photographs. Artworks that take on an entirely different presence when you’re standing in front of them.
If you haven’t experienced our new gallery yet - or it’s simply been a while - we’d love to welcome you this fall.
