Today the Soviet Union celebrated October Revolution Day, with a huge parade in Red Square. It was a big event and holiday for the Soviet people.

The 1977 Constitution, also known as the Brezhnev Constitution or the constitution of the developed Socialism, was the third and final constitution of the Soviet Union, adopted unanimously at the 7th (Special) Session of the Ninth Convocation of the Supreme Soviet and signed by Chairman of the Presidium Leonid Brezhnev. The 1977 Constitution replaced the 1936 Constitution and the Soviet public holiday of USSR Constitution Day was shifted from 5 December to 7 October.

September 1st was one of the most hated days by Soviet children. It was the first day of school during Soviet times. School was a 6 days a week ordeal in the USSR, with Sunday being the only day off.

On May 9 the Soviet Union celebrated Victory Day. It is a holiday that commemorates the Soviet victory over N**i Germany in 1945. Huge military parades in Moscow were the norm.

On May 1 and 2 the Soviet Union celebrated International Day of Workers Solidarity and it included a military display and was attended by the President and General Secretary of the Party.

62 years ago today, on April 12 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space, paving the way for human space exploration. On this day the Soviet Union celebrated Cosmonautics Day.
