The Rita Deanin Abbey Art Museum will hold creative writing workshops led by emerging poet JM Huck every Sunday in April to celebrate National Poetry Month.

Be inspired by the Rita Deanin Abbey Art Museum, a breathtaking space that celebrates the life's work of a passionate artist. Whether you're an experienced poet or just starting your creative journey, visit the museum to draw inspiration.

Join poet JM Huck as she guides you through Abbey's mesmerizing artworks based on the human figure. Engage in writing poems or stories, drawing from themes of exuberance and exploring the nuances of ability and disability.

🔹 No prior experience needed.
🔹 Bring: Notebook, pen/pencil, and comfortable shoes.
🔹 Enjoy extra time in the museum and sculpture garden post-workshop.

On International Women’s Day we honor Rita Deanin Abbey and her legacy.

Symbolically, the “Tower” is a guardian of nature, knowledge, enlightenment, and mankind’s achievements. It must remind us that we are the guardians of the planet and must strive together. And the “Spirit” is that of the search, the struggle of the process to become the best humanity can be. “Spirit Tower” as a symbol appropriately represents the library, the performing arts center, and a community gathering place for its most aspiring creative human goals.

Abstract structural forms in the sculpture conceptually relate to forms in nature that result from geological processes. There are fractures, segments from the main body of the sculpture, linear intersections, and transpositions. The geometric shapes correspond to the surrounding mountains, deserts, and plants and relate to man’s architectural forms. The verticality of the sculpture is juxtaposed with the curvilinear, horizontal flow of the library building, creating a harmony of contrast. The sculpture taps the energies of movement and light. Expanding and contracting shadows extend, repeat, and distort shapes, revealing new perspectives. The interactional space is defined, dissolved, and reborn every season with the changing position of the sun and each hour with the changing light.

In the forward of Abbey's Rio Grande book, William Fox writes about her use of characteristics of the desert in abstract compositions.

"To abstract" means to draw from, and away from, a particular instance, to get an essential form apart from pictorial representation. The desert lends itself to abstraction, appearing to us as if the flesh of the land had been drawn away and the intrinsic bones of the earth revealed." ~William Fox

Excerpt from Mapping the Empty, Eight Artists And Nevada. William Fox
"Abbey also seems to make art out of almost everything, whether drawing a n**e, painting an abstract landscape, or building sculptures, gates, and fireplaces. But the core concern of her life's work to which she always returns is the land- a basic relationship manifesting itself in all of the aforementioned materials and media. I use the words land instead of landscape and relationship instead of theme because her art is not that of a viewer watching the scenery roll by outside a car window. When I say, for example, that she has explored Arches National Monument, I mean that she has lived and made art there, not just visited as a tourist. When I say that she understands geology, I mean that she has taught interdisciplinary courses in art and geology, published a book about it, and spends considerable amounts of time buried up to her elbows in environmental impact studies of the nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, to which she remains adamantly opposed not just on principle but also on science. Land is not simply a subject for Abbey, but a significant fact of her life that she examines daily."

Artist’s Statement
Two triangles, symbolizing the Star of David, comprise the main sections of the sculpture, “Holocaust.” The stability of the base triangle signifies the history of the strength and endurance of the Jewish people. The base triangle is interrupted by the mass of a stepped plane, which represents the catastrophic, systematic annihilation during the Holocaust. The arm, emerging from the base triangle, connects the displaced second triangle of the Star, which hovers and anticipates reunification. These indestructible elements are eternally bound together by faith and depict the passage from despair to survival and enlightenment.
