Peter Wentz Farmstead

Peter Wentz Farmstead 18th-century historic house museum and working farm illustrating rural life in colonial PA Voted Montco Happening's Best Historic Spot of 2022!

Peter and Rosanna Wentz settled here in 1744. By 1758, they had built their English Georgian style house which featured many elements reflecting their German heritage. In the autumn of 1777, the Wentz home became temporary headquarters for General George Washington and his staff. After the war, Peter Wentz sold the farm to Devault Beiber. In 1794, it was purchased by Schwenkfelder Reverend Melchio

r Schultz and his family. Generations of the Schultz family continued to live and farm here until 1969, when the County of Montgomery purchased the property. The County restored the house to the way it would have appeared in the 1770s, when it served as Washington’s headquarters. The farm buildings, livestock, and kitchen garden represent early Pennsylvania German farming culture and practices in the region. The Peter Wentz Farmstead is a designated National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom site. Peter Wentz owned two enslaved men while he lived here. One of these men, Jack, made two attempts to escape to freedom. Tax records and runaway ads help us tell Jack’s story within the larger context of slavery in early Pennsylvania. TOURS

Anyone notice the new decoration on our lawn?

It's been a few months now, but this spring the staff at the Peter Wentz Farmstead erected a new historical marker on the corner of PA route 73 and Shearer Rd. This new sign is part of the Historical Marker Program of the Pennsylvania Trails of History. These markers capture "the stories of people, places, events, and innovations that have affected the lives of Pennsylvanians" and having one highlights the statewide significance of the Farmstead and its story. Stop by and check it out!

Cardinal Flower Update!

This spring, our farmers decided to stop mowing this area of the trail along the Zacharias. The idea was to leave the area open for the cardinal flowers to spread. Needless to say, it worked! A massive colony of these flowers self-established and are now in full bloom. Aside from being really pretty, they are also a crucial food source for pollinators such as monarch butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. In fact, at least one family of ruby throated hummingbirds have been seen hanging around this grove and feeding from the flowers. Stop by and see this amazing bit of nature for yourself.

Upcoming DOUBLE Event

On Saturday, September 19th, the Peter Wentz Farmstead will be hosting our annual Pawpaw Trek! Join us for a walk through our reforested walking trail along the Zacharias Creek. This area is home to a healthy population of pawpaw trees, which produce large green fruit known as, you guessed it, pawpaws. The tours will focus on the pawpaw, its ecology, history, and our efforts to reestablish pawpaws, along with other native plant, along the Zacharias. Afterward, you'll receive your very own pawpaw seeds and can even purchase a pawpaw sapling in our museum shop while supplies last.

That day also happens to be September's Colonial Saturday! We'll be demonstrating the colonial process known as "flax culture". Flax is a plant that once dries and processed, is used to make linen. Colonial Pennsylvanians like the Wentz's grew flax in their fields to produce clothing. Join us as we demonstrate breaking, cleaning, and combing flax plants to prep the fibers for spinning.

Flax demonstrations will run continuously from 10 to 4, while guided pawpaw walks will be held at 12:30, 1:30, and 2:30. The historic house will also be open for tours. Event is free and open to the public. Hope to see you there!

Yesterday, Prothonotary Noah Marlier and his office hosted a naturalization ceremony here at the Farmstead! Congratulations to the new American citizens, and everyone who made this event possible.

COOL FLOWER ALERT!

Our ongoing project to build a native plant forest along the Zacharias Creek is paying dividends yet again. The cardinal flowers are officially in bloom, and far more prevalent than last year! As our farmers have been planting this area, setting up a naturally reproducing colony of cardinal flowers has been a major goal, and more seedlings were planted around the area this year. The bright red flowers are a major attractor of pollinators such as butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. If you'd like to see these beauties, come take a walk on our trail along the Zacharias. You can't miss them. The farmers say the bloom has not yet peaked and will last for around a month. So be sure to come check it out while you can. We ask that you please refrain from picking the flowers, but pictures are highly encouraged! They'd make a great subject for say an art contest. Hint hint.
