Historical Society of Perry County

Historical Society of Perry County Our mission is to preserve, protect, and interpret the history of Perry County, Pennsylvania.

The Historical Society of Perry County serves as the steward of eight historic properties ranging in age from the 1821 Cochran-Anspach House in Millerstown to the 1884 Dromgold House and Farm in Shermansdale. We maintain one tavern, one covered bridge, two churches, two historic mansions, a schoolhouse, and a complete farmstead. We also operate and maintain a museum of Perry County History at Blue

Ball Tavern within Little Buffalo State Park, as well as a large collection of artifacts and manuscripts which document and highlight Perry County’s rich history. If you have a love of Perry County history or would like to learn more about our history, we cordially invite you to tour our properties, visit our museum, and help us preserve Perry County’s history.

Little Buffalo State Park was named for the Little Buffalo creek that runs through the heart of the park. But how was the creek named? Rumor has it that Indigenous tribes hunted bison in the region. But who were they, and were bison really here? In this talk we'll discuss physical and anecdotal evidence and let you decide!
If you need handicap accommodations please let us know ahead of time
Please Note: There are no restrooms at the tavern itself.

The Historical Society of Perry County extends a big thank you to the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society of PA and its president, Gloria Smedley, for their assistance in securing a National Register of Historic Places marker grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.

Another big thank you goes to Historical Society member Bryce Danko, Board Director Nathan Lesh, and Historical Society volunteers Ryan Duffy and John Bradshaw for getting the concrete poured and going the extra mile to level and install the sign. 🔨

The Society is very grateful for the help of the Theodore Burr Society and all others involved in getting this project completed and giving Red Bridge some well-deserved recognition during its 140th year.
