Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum

Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum Learn about and see the history of beautiful Lake Hopatcong

Located in a rustic 19th century building which served as a lock tender's house on the Morris Canal, the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum offers an entertaining and enlightening look at the history of New Jersey's largest lake. Step back to a time when the lake was actually two bodies of water and the Lenape lived along its shores. Learn of the building of the famous Morris Canal and the forming o

f modern day Lake Hopatcong, its main source of water. Travel back to the era when the Lake was a tourist mecca and some 40 hotels and rooming houses graced its shores. Relive the days when thousands flocked to Bertrand Island Amusement Park for dancing and "nickel nights." In an age before jets, before air conditioning and before super highways, Lake Hopatcong was a major northeast resort. Within easy reach of large cities to the east, the Lake's size and setting at over 900 feet above sea level made it a perfect resort. From the 1880's through the 1930's the Lake welcomed thousands each year, including leaders in government, industry and entertainment. Lower daytime temperatures and cool evenings made Lake Hopatcong a welcome respite from the urban centers to the east. Although other northwestern New Jersey towns were developed as resorts during this period, Lake Hopatcong quickly outdistanced all local rivals in popularity. While these other resorts shared Lake Hopatcong's proximity to the urban centers of the east, they could not match the lake's size or the ease with which it could be reached by rail.

This promises to be a truly memorable event at the lake and we will have three authorized drones filming the event. Photos and video will be shared widely as well as archived permanently in the museum so why not take the opportunity to decorate your boat or even wear a costume as you circle the lake. However, what's most important is your participation. We are thrilled to have you join the festivities.

Motor boats will gather in Great Cove. Volunteer boats decorated with Lake Hopatcong 250 banners will assist you in being in the right position and in leaving Great Cove to follow the Miss Lotta as she leads the parade around the lake. We ask that you be in place no later than 10:45 with no penalty for being a little early. The boats will proceed north and follow the attached map. The parade is expected to take just under two hours and there will hopefully be lots of people to wave to along the shoreline. Brady Bridge and River Styx Bridge will be closed to allow the public to cheer you on.

Sailboats will be gathering at their iconic starting point on the lake in front of the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club. Please be there for an 11:30 start. The goal is to put as many sails in the middle of the lake as possible. Sailing will occur to Halsey Island and back while the boat parade has not yet reached the main lake. Here again feel free to decorate or make your boat as much as you like. Similarly paddlers will be meeting in front of Lakeshore Village (site of the former Bertrand Island Park) for a short paddle at noon to further the celebration.

NJSP, Morris County Sheriff and Hopatcong police boats will assist and hopefully keep anyone from cutting across the parade and helping protect our sailors and paddlers. The bottom line is to have a great time, celebrate Lake Hopatcong, and commemorate America's 250th birthday!
