Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum collects, preserves and interprets the history and material culture of the Pennsylvania German rural community from 1740 to 1940 and enhances understanding of their successful practices, interactions with others, and the impact on the state and nation for citizens of and visitors to the Commonwealth. The museum's richly layered story is the history of an early Pennsylvania German settlement, an unusual farm family, and the ongoing creation and exploration of a wonderfully diverse collection of artifacts. When brothers Henry Kinzer Landis (1865-1955) and George Diller Landis (1867 - 1954) opened the museum in 1925 at their Landis Valley residence, the area had been a small Pennsylvania German settlement since the mid 1800s. Expanded to its current size, we now invite visitors to experience 18th and 19th century village and farm life in Lancaster County, Pa, all in one visit. With over 100 acres and many historic buildings to explore throughout the four seasons, there's always something to see at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum.

So this is... winter at Landis Valley?

Even our oxen seem a bit confused by the spring-like weather, but they aren't complaining. Five minutes before this photo was taken, all three were lounging in the meadow, basking in the sun.

What's especially nice about this kind of weather at this time of year is that our visitors get treated to personal guided tours around the property, and it's comfortable enough to make it a pleasant day out in the sun.

We are open for personal guided tours (at no extra cost) Wednesday through Sunday all the way through March 31, so take advantage of this while it's still amazingly beautiful outside.

We have added two new sheep to the flock! They are a heritage breed known as Leicester (pronounced "Lester") Longwool, the earliest recorded English breed. Born in spring, they are about half grown and will increase in size and wooliness. Since they are longwools, their fleece length can grow to 8" or 9" each year.

Just to clear up any confusion, tonight's Bonfire evening will take place regardless of the weather. What might not happen are wagon rides - it depends on how heavy the rain is coming down. I am told that we should be able to have the bonfire lit regardless of the weather. Don't forget those canned good donations - let's really work to help fill those pantry shelves! See you tonight!

"Christmas in the Village" at Landis Valley Quiz -

Why is this Christmas tree upside down?

a) Because the owner has been drinking too much "aged" cider.
b) To keep pets and other animals from gorging themselves on the tasty ornaments.
c) To save space on the floor.
d) Because Belsnickel played a trick on this household.

You can find out the real answer (and have a whole lot of other holiday fun) by coming to the annual Christmas in the Village at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum December 7&8. It's like stepping back into the late 1800s for a traditional PA Dutch/German Christmas.

You'll find harp and harpsichord entertainment, hand bells, period-costumed volunteers, traditional decorations, great make-and-take crafts for both children and adults,... and even Belsnickel lurking around discovering who has been naughty and who has been nice.

Start your holiday here. If you are finding it hard to catch the Christmas spirit, it could turn everything upside down and get good things happening for you.

"Christmas in the Village" at Landis Valley Quiz -

Is this man cornered because...

a) he picked someone's pocket?
b) he has someone's pet dog in his bag (possibly for dinner)?
c) he knows who has been naughty or nice this year?
d) he is explaining the meaning of life?

Here's a hint: He is NOT the person most people look forward to seeing coming their way in the days before Christmas.

The real answer is a fascinating insight into the PA Dutch heritage of Lancaster County and will provide some fun laughs for your entire family at the annual Christmas in the Village event December 7 & 8 at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum.

Come and visit. You will find lots of family fun activities, music, and make-and-take crafts for the holiday season. But keep your eyes open. This guy could be following you and you don't even know it.

"Christmas in the Village" at Landis Valley Quiz:

What is the biggest similarity between an 1800s Christmas as depicted at Landis Valley's "Christmas in the Village" and Christmas today?

It has to be that almost everyone then and now loves sweets... and baking during the holidays is a family tradition that goes back as far as anyone can remember.

Find out how they baked all those luscious sweets back in the 1800s without electricity, a gas oven, or even a microwave and why they tasted at least as good as mom's best homemade cookies do today. You will learn a lot that will make you appreciate this holiday season even more... and perhaps give you some new traditions to make your celebrations even more special this year.

You will also find great musical entertainment, great decorations, great family activities, and even a chance to meet Belsnickel.

You can even make traditional ornaments and take them home to remember how it would have been if you were suddenly transported back in time to a Christmas 150 years ago.

Check it out here...

You might even run into Belsnickel as he makes his annual visit to households in the village.

I wish I could tell you that you would get all this great food, if you donate, but... sorry... we couldn't resist it and ate it all. But we will be glad to teach YOU how this kind of bounty can come from a simple fireplace and wood-fired oven.

Even better, if you come over to the Visitor's Center today to make your donation between 9am and 4pm, we will also give you two FREE museum passes that even cover the Herb Faire and Harvest Days! (I know that's not quite as good as food, but that's what we have.)
