Landis Valley Museum

Landis Valley Museum Landis Valley Museum was once an actual crossroads village. Situated on 100 acres in scenic Lancaster, PA, it is a living history museum that collects, preserves, exhibits, and interprets Pennsylvania German culture from the 1740s through the 1940s.

Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum collects, preserves and interprets the history and material culture of the Pennsylvania German rural community from 1740 to 1940 and enhances understanding of their successful practices, interactions with others, and the impact on the state and nation for citizens of and visitors to the Commonwealth. The museum's richly layered story is the history of an early Pennsylvania German settlement, an unusual farm family, and the ongoing creation and exploration of a wonderfully diverse collection of artifacts. When brothers Henry Kinzer Landis (1865-1955) and George Diller Landis (1867 - 1954) opened the museum in 1925 at their Landis Valley residence, the area had been a small Pennsylvania German settlement since the mid 1800s. Expanded to its current size, we now invite visitors to experience 18th and 19th century village and farm life in Lancaster County, Pa, all in one visit. With over 100 acres and many historic buildings to explore throughout the four seasons, there's always something to see at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum.

Your help is needed! We know that everyone that comes to Landis Valley is drawn for different reasons. As we begin to prepare for reopening, we realize that due to Covid19 things might not be quite the same. Our top priority is the visitor and their experience while at Landis Valley.
Could you please take a little time and share with us what you like best about the museum and why you come. Is it the farm animals, classes, the collections, demonstrations, gardens or something else? We look forward to hearing what you have to say. Thank you!

“I am beginning to learn
that it is the sweet, simple
things of life which are
the real ones after all.”
-Laura Ingalls Wilder
Landis Valley’s Children’s Program Coordinator, Sheri reads this quote every day and genuinely believes in its lasting truth. She received this quote along with a sketch of Laura’s iconic “Little House” as a gift from a dear friend. Sheri believes the underlying endurance of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books lie in her themes of family, perseverance, and simplicity. A simpler life has great appeal to many. While it may have previously been a whimsical dream. Today, many can spend more time with their family and enjoy simple, family-oriented activities. The goal is to show how to have fun the “old fashioned” way. As part of our educational programs, we encourage children to “peek” behind the curtain and see how life was lived during a simpler time. The Museum Store offers several games and toys used in the programs. Pictures and prices in the comments. Margaret Herbener is a twenty six year old paper-cutting artist from Rochester, NY who is currently living in Grove City PA. We were first introduced to Margaret by her Aunt, Patti Erickson another Museum store artist! She was inspired by the Scherenschnitte tradition and created unique work using her own method of papercutting. Margaret’s work has been awarded by the Guild of American Papercutters and is displayed in their National Gallery. In making her pieces, Margaret is focused on composition and line. She desires quality and intricacy. She believes art is a magical experience that opens up worlds to both artist and viewer, and hopes you enjoy the experience of watching her work unfold. To see more of Margaret’s work or to make a purchase, prices range from $5.95 for cards and $44 -$99 for framed originals. DM, Call 717-569-9312 or email [email protected].
