Landis Valley Museum

Landis Valley Museum Landis Valley Museum was once an actual crossroads village. Situated on 100 acres in scenic Lancaster, PA, it is a living history museum that collects, preserves, exhibits, and interprets Pennsylvania German culture from the 1740s through the 1940s.

Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum collects, preserves and interprets the history and material culture of the Pennsylvania German rural community from 1740 to 1940 and enhances understanding of their successful practices, interactions with others, and the impact on the state and nation for citizens of and visitors to the Commonwealth. The museum's richly layered story is the history of an early Pennsylvania German settlement, an unusual farm family, and the ongoing creation and exploration of a wonderfully diverse collection of artifacts. When brothers Henry Kinzer Landis (1865-1955) and George Diller Landis (1867 - 1954) opened the museum in 1925 at their Landis Valley residence, the area had been a small Pennsylvania German settlement since the mid 1800s. Expanded to its current size, we now invite visitors to experience 18th and 19th century village and farm life in Lancaster County, Pa, all in one visit. With over 100 acres and many historic buildings to explore throughout the four seasons, there's always something to see at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum.

A great Christmas Decoration family project? Christmas luminaries have been used for centuries to provide a warmth to a home's decorations at the holidays. You can create your own as a great individual or even family project. Check out our class with Beth Feaser, creator of the popular "Tin Lizzie" jewelry and ornaments.

Limited space, so don't wait to sign up. Call the museum at 717.569.0401 OR you can quickly register online at...

https://www.landisvalleymuseum.org/event/basics-of-tinsmithing/

Date of class: Nov 23, 1-4pm

All through most of the 18th and 19th centuries, tinsmithing was a very popular usable craft/skill in most households. Due to its low cost and easy-to-work characteristics, tin items could be found in most households. Candle holders, lanterns, cookie cutters, ornaments, and many other light useful items were quite common. And children were taught at an early age how to work with tin to create their own works of art. This class and workshop is a fantastic way to learn this old skill and create your own decorations for the holidays.

Why would you want to have lunch with the Landis Brothers? After all, they have been gone for quite some time! But Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum has invited them (in the form of two very talented and entertaining actors from our museum) to host a lunch and learn with stories about their escapades and adventures in founding a museum with the largest collection of PA German heritage artifacts, buildings, and stories available anywhere.

Lunch is served at the hotel on the museum property and is followed with a very entertaining interactive living history presentation by "the brothers" as they relate how they accumulated such an amazing collection.

Space is limited, so get your reservations in ASAP. You can register online at...

The Date is: November 16, 11am - 3pm.

"But, sis! I didn't really mean it!" Hopefully this little guy's sister is just demonstrating how to chop wood for Harvest Days at Landis Valley Museum back in the mid-1960s. But I think I would put more than a pole between me and her with her hand on that hatchet.

Harvest Days at Landis Valley has been teaching children and adults all kinds of old skills for the past 60 years now. Come and learn how to do all kinds of things that demonstrate how far we have come in being able to provide the basics of living without all the heavy, time-consuming work that was required in the past.

Harvest Days is this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, October 12-13, at Landis Valley Museum. Great fun for the entire family. (NOTE: Definitely, no hatchets will be given to children!)

How about this Ghost of Harvest Days past? Here's a photo from the late 50s or very early 60s of making apple butter at Harvest Days at Landis Valley. By design, our apple butter demonstration looks pretty much the same with the exception of the 1950s cars in the background. Even then, this event brought in busloads of people, as you can see from the buses parked under the trees! Come see for yourself October 12 and 13. https://www.landisvalleymuseum.org/event/harvest-days/

"Teach your calf to heel?" If you think that's easy, you should see Katelyn Hess of Landis Valley Museum trying with the new ox calf. It looks ridiculous, but it is critical for an ox to be able and willing to walk alongside a human without a lead while pulling a wagon. The first day I saw them go by, the calf was bucking and jumping at almost everything. Now it is doing better at heeling than most dogs.

The Wool Frolic is this Saturday, September 14th from 10am-4pm! What is the Wool Frolic? A fun little event where you can see looms and spinning wheels (among other things) in action and learn how they work. See how fiber is spun directly from a rabbit - really! Meet a sheep and shop among a few great vendors of woolley wonders. Oh, and then there is the yarn sale, where you can find some great buys on yarn, fabric, notions, and books! Admission.

Where's the meat? Where IS the meat? As absurd as this looks, after completely rebuilding the tavern oven at Landis Valley Museum, we asked David Horst, our very talented contracted reconstruction person, if we could possibly make a modification. Instead of just laughing at us, he jumped (or rather squirmed and crawled) right in to see if it was possible. He made it out just fine. Amazing the depths some people will go to in order to satisfy a customer!

“Escape” Landis Valley

Who loves "escape" experiences? How about one set in history and gives you an entire historical village in which to work? Me, too! Here is one set in the Landis Valley Museum village, not in a room. Your team has to find a way to escape the British who are chasing you (the members of the Continental Congress who have run to Lancaster) before the British arrive and capture you. Spys, good guys, bad guys, secret information, and lots of fun. One day only on September 28, 2019. Check it out and sign up at https://www.landisvalleymuseum.org/event/escape-landis-valley/

But don't wait long to sign up. The British are onto you and they are headed your way!

The Tavern Garden certainly turned out some gigantic squash this year! What’s really fascinating is how the residents in the mid-1800s could hold this to last for the winter. If you want to know how, ask at the Tavern.

The inventory team is hard at work in the country store today. Pictured are Special Projects Chief Dave Dunn and PHMC Keystone intern Laura Foose; PHMC Collections Manager Mary Jane Miller and PHMC Keystone intern Abby Teaford; and Millersville University intern Elliott Bollinger. The team is carefully measuring, describing, and entering each artifact into the PHMC database, then taking an image of the artifact to compliment the description. It's part of a painstaking, years-long process of inventorying thousands of pieces in the collection.
