The 1926 Sesquicentennial, held in Philadelphia, celebrated the 150th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The Palace of Fine Arts at the Sesquicentennial featured artwork from all over the world on display, including ten works by Charles Demuth. He won a silver medal for his watercolor, Plums, currently on view at Demuth Museum of Art on King.

Reflecting on this honor, Demuth wryly wrote to this friend and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz about being recognized for his work:

Dear Stieglitz -

I must write to you and tell you the news, -- I don't think it is, as yet, given to the public. The Sesqui Exhibition gave me a silver [medal] on my branch of plums that water colour you had last winter in my show. It seems funnier to be noticed than not to be.

Love - Demuth
